Title: Marquette vs UW-Madison game
Post by: JD on November 14, 2011, 04:47:40 PM
Hello fellow MU faithful, I was just wondering if anybody would be interested in going to the $hithole they call the Kohl Center for the game?  It would be a sweet victory especially in person so who's joining!?

Not many seats, just a couple of rows in Section 120.

Most people don't pick their school based on basketball affiliation.

I'm not most people though.

To re-tell an old joke, what's the difference between the Kohl Center and a porcupine?

A porcupine has 17,000 pricks on the outside.

I wouldn't call it a $shithole, but it sure is void of any character. Defines the word generic. I don't think the Bradley Center is anything to write home about, but it is 10 years older than the Kohl Center.

I'm going to scalp a few weeks before. Haven't missed this game in 7 years. Watching how athletic our team is, I can't understand how this should be close. But I'm sure it will be. Along with their high ranking also, don't get the Jordan Taylor hype. He is a good player, no doubt. But I would rather have DJO. Subtract Leuer and Nankvill and where do their points come from? Does Blue come home and have the defensive game of his life on Taylor? I certainly hope so.

It's going to be a great game, I can't wait to see us put serious ball pressure put on them.

I think their ball movement and three point shooting will make it tough on us in addition to being at the Kohl Center. Also, our rebounding will have to step up. I think it is a tough game.

I plan on being there as well.

I have never been excited by the interior of the complex.  Pretty cold and blase.  It is, though, fan friend in terms of sight lines, proximity to the court ...

They are athletic enough so that if they space themselves, move the ball, and shoot well enough, they will give MU a real tough time.  Especially since they never turn the ball over.

I will hopefully be attending as well, first time to the KOHL Center for me.

As for the Badgers, I agree they are probably a little overrated but with the way they shoot in that building and have a lot of guys who can hit 3s we will be in for a game if our 3 pt defense doesnt improve.

Have my tickets, will be sporting MU gear.
The Kohl Center is a much better basketball venue than the BC.  Dark ceiling, they close the hallways with curtains during play, to block light, so it has a "hunkered down" feel to it.

If it's a schmidthole, then what is the BC?

The court reminds me of the MECCA when they would turn the lights off in the seating area.  The focus is on the court.

I used to prefer the Kohl Center.  Now, though, for atmosphere I prefer the BC.  I would take the seating configuration and aforementioned focus on the court from the Kohl Center to make the perfect venue.

Its on BTN because Dec 3 is a huge college football day so ESPN is probably not interested. Isn't the game a week earlier than previous years?  I don't recall conflicts with football other than D2 or D3 playoffs.

It is...usually it's the second Saturday in December. I don't know why, but the date for the Green Bay game was set as Dec 10 before the UW date was announced. On the positive, it should mean more tickets available for Marquette fans.

Badger football is back in the driver's seat for getting to the B10 title game that's the same day.  In that case, there will be very little statewide interest in this game.  It should make tickets very easy to get though for us, and I'd expect a much bigger visitor showing than normal.

I have tickets to this one but will be selling them the second the football team clinches a spot in Indy for the title game, as I imagine many Wisconsin football fans will be doing as well.  It's simply a much bigger game.

Even if you don't go to Marquette.  I personally prefer college basketball over any other sport to watch.  (Especially Becky football, years and years filled with hopes and empty promises.)

I will be at the game.  Just landed 2 rooms at the Hilton Monona Terrace for $54 each as a Hotwire Hot Rate.  It's the 3.5 Star Spectacular Savings hotel near the Capitol if you are interested.  Regular rate was $123.

Also, there's a Groupon for $116 to stay at the Concourse (includes a $50 gift card at the hotel restaurant).  Regular rate was about $140.

The more MU fans in Madison that night, the better!

Hilton over the Concourse any day of the week.  Have dinner down the street at Paisans.  For a more formal dinner, I recommend Delmanico's.  The Great Dane is excellent to eat and drink.  All within walking distance of the Hilton.

Made my night. Just booked it for $53. Thanks much.

Watching Badgers on espn3 -- freshman Ben Brust had 4 threes in the first 10 minutes. Zero perimeter D, but still.

He played last year in at least a few games. I played soccer with him and he really shouldn't be a problem for MU's super athletic guards. I was both quicker and faster than Brust and let's just say Vander would run circles around me.

How many years have we been saying that?

Those guards don't beat people off the dribble.  They are set shooters.  And their offense is designed to get them the ball for free looks.
Title: Re: Marquette vs UW-Madison game
Post by: cheebs09 on November 16, 2011, 08:31:33 PM
I've been watching the second half and they don't look very good. They had a 7 minute scoring drought early on in the second half. I'm sure they are much better than they are showing, but they look like they will live and die by the 3 point shot. There isn't much scoring inside and Colgate isn't very good. Badgers defense looks solid, but Colgate doesn't have much of a threat on offense.

Granted this is one game that isn't very competitive, and I missed the first half where I'm guessing they played a lot better. If we are able to limit their open threes, limit offensive rebounds and stay out of foul trouble (tough to do there) we should be in good shape. The problem is we don't do those first two very well so far.
Title: Re: Marquette vs UW-Madison game
Post by: GGGG on November 16, 2011, 08:49:38 PM
The problem with the swing is that it is too much based on the 3 point shot.  That is usually why they play well at home...but their offense can look terrible on the road or at neutral sites.  For instance, last year's starting small forward, Tim Jarmuz, took 105 shots last year...89 from the 3.  Seriously...their starting "3" took only 16 two point shots last year.
Title: Re: Marquette vs UW-Madison game
Post by: cheebs09 on November 16, 2011, 08:58:41 PM
Is that how the swing is supposed to be in its truest form? I thought the big benefit was to have guys like Harris and Taylor (both Kam and Jordan) who could post their man up down low? I agree, that's what it has turned into the last few years, but just wondering if that's how it always was. I thought it functioned best with a guy like Butch who could shoot from outside and draw his man away and with guards who were taller and bigger that had post games. Basically making the defense guard in uncomfortable positions. The only swing I see is them swinging it around the perimeter.
Title: Re: Marquette vs UW-Madison game
Post by: GGGG on November 16, 2011, 09:10:24 PM
You are correct, but they just haven't had that type of player lately....the Freddie Owens or Alando Tucker types that can post.  Their guards have been more of the Bohannon or Gasser variety...

But solid outside shooting is very important in the swing.  They just haven't had the inside game to counteract it lately.
