Title: Gary Harris to Michigan State
Post by: Lennys Tap on November 09, 2011, 09:09:33 PM
Top 15 prospect Gary Harris from Indianapolis (the guy TC went to visit illegally last month) is going to Michigan State. Maybe Tom was just putting in a good word for his mentor.

Actually, TC's chances of landing Harris - even after the illegal contact attempts - were very small given Harris is a high profile recruit (competition), and he didn't play for the Indiana Elite.  It really doesn't matter that Harris is an Indiana native, balled in Indianapolis - Crean still can't get these 5-star kids (unless of course) the quid pro quo is in effect..as its been with Indiana Elite.

Dude, come on.

Was just pointing out the facts thus far on TC's recruiting at IU - he does great with top prospects now that play for Indiana Elite - yet can't land those high profile in-state kids like Mitch McGary and Gary Harris who don't ball for the Elite.  I believe his entire 2012 class all balled for Indiana Elite  ESPN felt the need to do a LONG article on the sudden pipeline of Indiana Elite kids to IU after that "favors" IU did for Indiana Elite coaches son, board of directors son, etc...

I'll say no more on the matter Hards, out of respect, but the above statements are simply factual.

I would consider a lot of it hearsay an rumor.  Believe me, I have no love for the man, but there really isn't an acknowledged quid pro quo.

Ners is rights on his facts Whether or not those facts establish a quid pro quo or are coincidental is in the eye of the beholder.

So it is a fact that TC can't get high profile kids to IU without a quid pro quo?

Agreed.  That last comment was over the line.  ners should edit and remove that comment.  No need for accussations.  We get po'd when the butchbadger's, badgerf's and swenson's of the world make cheap allogations without fact against MU.  Why is this any different?

Some of the key points from that post.

Indiana is an Adidas school.  Indiana Elite is an Adidas AAU team.
MSU is a Nike school.  D3 Pride (Harris's AAU team) is a Nike team (technically DWade)

No, that's Ner's conclusion based on the facts. It's not the only conclusion that could be drawn. One could also conclude that it's a small sample and likely a coincidence, that it's a Nike/Addidas thing, that TC has done a good job resurrecting a previously strong relationship between IU and Indiana Elite or that there's not enough information to draw any conclusions. Connect (or not) the dots however you choose.

That is what the initial, "Dude, come on" was about.  I disagreed with the conclusion. :)

Gary Harris the Top 15 recruit from Indy that Tommy Naismith illegally recruited has signed with Michigan State.

IU is still oversigned by 2 players at this point.

Squeemish and Squirmworthy

Some of the key points from that post.

  • 76% of the Top 25 recruits signed with college teams that shared sponsors with their AAU team.
  • The main exceptions to the sponsor to recruit connection are the great coaches who can draw across sponsorships (think the Coach K peer set).
  • The other exceptions appear to be driven by close proximity to the recruiting college, Prep school sponsor affiliation, and past AAU roots to a recruiter on staff (think Faust).

Indiana is an Adidas school.  Indiana Elite is an Adidas AAU team.
MSU is a Nike school.  D3 Pride (Harris's AAU team) is a Nike team (technically DWade)

Don't let facts get in the way of your rage, Sugar.

TC is a cheater, and Ners has proven it again.

While you are so hell bent on the facts 2002, don't let the fact that prior to giving the son of Indiana Elite Coach a job on the IU staff as Video Coordinator, and giving a walk on slot to the son of an Indiana Elite Board of Directors - IU was still an Addidas school, and TC had not landed any Indiana Elite players.

Why did ESPN do a big article on the "coincidental" nature of the above?

Lastly, I have no problem with any coach/program developing a pipeline with AAU schools - its how the game needs to be played as Sugar's article points out the power of the AAU influence.  But let's not deny the facts and track record at IU.

After a few tough years for MSU, Izzo has now taken the best prospects in back-to-back classes in the talent rich state of Indiana.

First Branden Dawson (former MU recruit), and now Mr. Harris.

Very impressive Mr. Izzo.  Very impressive.

For the record, Hulls and Capabianco were Elite alums...and committed before Drew Adams was hired by IU. He was a student assistant under Bruce at UT before that.

I'm shocked (SHOCKED!) that a coach that has been to multiple Final Fours, and won a National Championship, at a high profile, well known basketball school can recruit these types of players.

Yeah, Sparty will be stacked the next few years...more so than usual.

I'm not going to pretend to know every detail about Indiana recruiting. I don't follow it. I'm not interested in it. I don't know anything about AAU connections, etc.

I read the ESPN article. Didn't seem that damning to me, especially considering Sugar's numbers. College recruiting is about relationships. Buzz has great contacts at JuCo's and in Texas. That's awesome and has helped MU (see recent signings).

Crean is developing his own contacts... and this is where we are just going to have to agree to disagree. You seem to think that those contacts and relationships are shady in nature. That's your opinion (correct me if I am wrong).

I don't share that opinion because I feel like that is automatically jumping to a conclusion without enough facts.

We can argue back and forth until the cows come home, but the reality is that we have differing opinions, so it's best to leave it at that.
