Title: Majerus/new Iowa Coach?
Post by: Sir Lawrence on March 31, 2007, 01:20:25 AM
Majerus Interviewing for Iowa Job
New coach possibly named on Sunday.

03-30-2007 : Iowa City

(CBS 2)

The University of Iowa might have a new Head Basketball Coach as soon as Sunday, and that man could be Rick Majerus.

CBS2 has learned that the Hawkeye Pep Band has been told to be on standby, and Recreational Services at Iowa have been told they might have to move Sunday's intramural basketball championships from Carver-Hawkeye Arena to the Fieldhouse in case there is a news conference.

Two sources tell CBS2 Sports Director Kevin Hall that former Utah Head Coach Rick Majerus is meeting with Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta tonight to discuss the Hawkeye job.

Majerus is 59 years old. He took Utah to the Final Four in 1998, losing to Kentucky in the championship game.

Majerus stepped down for health reasons in 2004.  He accepted the Southern California job later that year, but changed his mind the next day.

Majerus has spent the past few years as an analyst for ESPN.

That would really suck if we lose Crean because he would be the perfect fall back.

yes, that is my fear as well.  Sans a permanent AD, Rick made sense if TC left MU

on Iowa before the Warrior gig is resolved, leads me to think he doesn't want to come home again and maybe that's a good thing. Or, he could change his mind on Monday.

Rick would have been a nice fall back option but I view him more as a safe choice than anything else.  He would have kept us at about the same level we are at now but I don't think he could take us to that next level that most here demand.

Or, Rick already knows that Tom's coming back so he figures he'll take this job that's not too far from Milwaukee. IF he knows this and he wants back in coaching, it makes sense. IF he does not know the situation w/Crean, then yes, we may have just lost our insurance policy in case Crean leaves.

Anyone have Stan Heath's phone number? Hopefully, Doc Rivers' number is unlisted and nobody can find him.
