I honestly do not understand why some people think we'll lose this game. True it is away, but I see this Wisconsin team and I struggle to see anybody worth mentioning outside of Jordan Taylor. I don't know if anyone agrees, but as a college basketball fan let alone a Marquette fan I think Wisconsin is one of the most overrated teams in the country coming into the season. Vanderbilt is by far our most difficult OOC game, there talent is far superior to Wisconsin. Any MU fan should see this as a winnable game.
While it's true Vandy is the toughest OOC game, UW has obviously been virtually unbeatable at home, and they've got a proven commodity in Taylor. I'm pretty sure the remaining players will improve from last year, and they'll be a tough out. Had this game been at the BC, I'd heartedly agree with you... it's not, and they've proven they win at the Kohl hole.
It's just hard to see a team where the next guy mentioned is Mike Bruesewitz as being better than us...I look at Chris, Jae, DJO, Jamil, and Junior and think our starting 5 is being disrespected. I used to stand by ESPN but lately I have started to question their bias.

Because in college basketball you can never tell. That is why it is one, if not the best sport.
Example Depaul loss two years ago, Loserville game last year and on the win side, the Syracuse sweet sixteen game.
Not disrespect, just speculation and since it is an away game, yes they will be the favorite.
Neutral court or a home game, and we win. Honestly, the Kohl center is probably worth 10-15 pts. Enough to swing the game. Check Wiscy's home record under Bo. That stat does not lie. I fully agree with this being a less talented team than some other badger teams. An all-American point guard and that arena is enough.
- Bo has a career 93.3% winning percentage at the KC
- Marquette has one active player who has appeared in an NCAA game at the KC
- The three blind mice will magically appear with whistles at tip time
Kohl Center. Period. Wisconsin will be the favorite and should be the favorite.
As for them being Jordan Taylor and nothing else ... I remember a couple years ago, none of us even knew who Jon Leuer was until he had a big game against Marquette and went on to have a nice career.
Marquette fans might hate to admit it -- I do! -- but Bo is pretty good at coaching up whatever talent he has. More than just pretty good, actually. Wisconsin almost always is much better than the sum of its parts -- and that's without a great player like Taylor.
I hope our Golden Warrior Eagles win. I make no predictions.
I would think UW fans look at MU and do not see anybody good besides DJO.

Really? You are kidding, right?
Not to mention Wisconsin's turtle pace allows them to stay in practically every game so it really can come down to one player (Taylor) to take over the final minutes.

Seriously you don't think UW fans know who Jamil and Jae are? You think that Ginger-boy is better than those 2? Come on now. Vander will be amped for this game, and Jamil will be too. I say we win by 4, but I have never been to the Kohl Center. I just think that our team is better and will win the game.

Their advantage there is ridiculous. There's a reason they've beaten top-five Duke, Purdue, and Ohio State there in the past two years (OSU twice). I'm not saying it can't happen, I do think we have the better team, but Bo's team always is better than expected and he finds guys to do what he needs, and they have a legitimate star this year. Playing at home, with a reffing crew that always seems to be partisan in that building, we are deservedly the underdog.
Can we beat them? Yes. Will it be easy? Hell no.

Let's put it this way.....has there ever been a bigger talent disparity between the two teams than there is this year?? Not IMO other than maybe the 3 quick fouls on DWade year(I'm still fuming over that game), if MU doesn't beat UW this year(I don't care where it's played), then I will begrudgingly state, MU may never beat them again.
Dudes, UW is better than MU. And, you want to be favored at the Kohl Center? Come on, man. Get real. Sure, Marquette can win, but to question the the logic is clearly nuts.
I think we have a real good shot. Honestly, the last time we played there I thought we didn't have much of a shot and we were down pretty much the whole game, but after getting down a bunch early we played much better and made a game of it somewhat. I think this year we have the better team talent-wise. Taylor is a great point guard, but if I remember right, when Leuer was struggling Taylor had some pretty poor games shooting. He may have gotten his points, but it took a lot of shots.
I may be viewing through my MU 3-goggles, but I just don't see Bruesewitz and Gasser as playmakers. I felt a lot of their points were offensive rebound garbage points and 3 pointers when the defense collapsed on Leuer and Nankivil. I'm sure they will have some random guys step up like they always do, but I just don't see them being as good as years past (I know we say this all the time), but one of the constants the last few years was Leuer. I think they will miss him a lot and Nankivil too. They were both threats on the inside, but they don't have that anymore.
I think if Vander improved as much as has been written about, then we can be very good. I think Junior developed a lot of confidence at the end of last year. Also, I know it was a scrimmage and I only saw the short clips, but by the sounds of it, Jamil Wilson is playing a lot tougher and stronger inside than he has in the past. I think we have a good shot this year.

To a UW fan, Jamil was a high school kid who turned them down a couple of years ago, and then as far as they are concerned disappeared. Here's hoping that they receive a rude awakening.

155-12. One of those losses came at the hands of MU in 2007
Since 1983, we have won in Madison twice - in '07 and in '97. That is a record of 2-12 in the last 14 games in Madison. That is why it will be tough.

I kinda hate to admit it, but Glaser turned out to be a tremendous player last year for a frosh. Bruesewitz was none too shabby in the NCAA's, I think.

I was at that game in 2007. Brian Butch's Badgers were favored in that one, but 'rel, Wes, Dominic, and Lazar all put in good performances and we beat them at the KC for the first time in a long time. Felt great being there to witness it. I'm heading up there again this year for the first time since that game. Hopefully some repeat magic. I think we have a good chance at beating them as I think we are the better team, but that place is awfully tough to play in and UW is very solid. Should be a good game

There's a huge talent disparity. But I think we were also much more talented last year. In terms of sheer talent, JFB > Leuer, DJO > Taylor, and Jae
> Nankivil (that's the closest). But this isn't about talent. Leuer, Taylor, and Nankivil were very sound players. What they lack in talent they make up for in great technical skill. And they play a system that fits them like a glove. Bo does a great job of getting guys that will win playing his style, even if they aren't 1/10th as talented as the guys we typically have.
And is there a bigger home-court advantage in the NCAAs than the Kohl? Bo Ryan is 152-11 in that building. So if they play 16 home games a year, that's roughly a 15-1 record every year while routinely playing against teams like Ohio State and Michigan State that are routinely in the top-10 in the nation. Not to mention visits from other ranked Big Ten teams, biennial visits from quality ACC teams, as well as our trips up there. They have won 37 of their last 38 games in that building. It's not an accident or a fluke.
We can win. We are more talented. But anyone expecting that we will go in there and walk out with a comfortable win is delusional. tower said it very well when he talked about that building being worth 10-15 points. I think the question to ask is "do you think Marquette is 15 points better than UW on a neutral court?" If the answer is yes, we should win. If they answer is no or maybe, then we'll be in for a hell of a fight to get the W.

Glad you can admit you were impressed by 'Glaser'.
With 1:00 to play and a 5 point lead Bo doesn't lose too many games. Great free throw shooting, limited turnovers, etc. He takes the air out of the ball just like Dick Bennett.
We will shoot with 20 seconds left on the clock shot at the 1:00 minute mark thinking if we go up by 7 pts.....it's game over. When DB misses and we get a quick foul, S Hall is shooting free throws with the clock stopped. After making 2 FTs, it is a 3 point lead with 50 seconds left. Bo and Dick know that a 5 point lead with an expired shot clock at 30 seconds is much more clser to a win than a potential 7 point lead at 1:00.
That aside, Ed Hightower ASSURED that Becky would win that game. It was comical--even the Becky fans at the Kohl were in slight agreement.

There's no doubt we have talent, but part of their talents (Leuer, Taylor, Nankivil) is being a technically sound basketball player. They all play smart and deliver. Jordan Taylor might be the most talented out of that bunch too, in my opinion. But I do agree with most posters here that our team looks a bit stronger on paper simply because UW lost a lot in Leuer and Nankivil inside. Despite losing Jimmy and Dwight, we're returning guys who might be a little bit ahead of some of UW's replacements.

I agree with much of what you said, but the star comparison seems a bit biased. I'd give Butler a slight edge over Leuer based on his all-around game including defense and rebounding. I'd say Crowder and Nankivil were a push, both inconsistent offensively, Nankivil the better defender, Crowder the better offensive rebounder. As good as DJO is, Jordan Taylor is better, plus he's a point guard. Meaning he's not only the best, but he plays the most important position on the court. Without Leuer and Nankivil, and with J. Wilson sliding into Butler's position, I feel we are in better shape this season.

Ooft...I'm not sure I can agree with that. DJO is undoubtedly the better athlete, that's not even close. He's also better at driving the lane and finishing at the rim. Defensively, I think it's about a wash. Taylor is probably a bit more consistent with his D, but when he's on his game, DJO is the better defender. Shooting is also probably a wash. Of course, everyone will point to last year when Taylor hit over 43% from three, but let's not forget DJO hit over 47% from three the year before. It's a lot easier when you have other sharpshooters to get you open (Leuer and Nankivil, or Hayward and Acker). As far as passing and controlling the ball, Taylor gets the clear edge. And yes, a star PG is usually more valuable than a star SG.
But we've yet to see either of them as the #1 option, and for many points it's tough to be the top guy as both scorer and distributor. I have absolute faith in what DJO will be able to do this year, even with Lazar and Jimmy both having departed over the past couple years. I'm not nearly as confident that Taylor will thrive when his next best options are Gasser and Brusewicz instead of Leuer and Nankivil.
And quick back to the top...bear in mind I used
> for Crowder ;) I'd say Jae is either equal to or better than Nankivil. Not guaranteeing he's better, it's very close, but I wouldn't put KN ahead of Crowder (equal at best).
I didn't go in 2009 at Madison. I'll be back to go for two in a row at the Kohl Center for me. I got lucky this time with face value tickets. ;D
