Why is Nolan ineligible?

From late October:  Phillip Nolan, a 6-foot-11, senior, is attending Milwaukee Riverside after going to a prep school last year. According to Tigers coach Tyrone Lewis, Nolan's initial appeal to play this season was denied by the WIAA but that the school is continuing to work to help him gain eligibility.

Yes.  Buzz and staff members probably know about these academic issues, especially after Nolan transferred like three times.

It's more about transfer rules....

All Nolan has to do is hire a lawyer and sue the WIAA. Guaranteed win.

I don't think this bodes well for Burton since he is going through the same type of thing. I don't know if the situations are different at all.

It's not "more" about transfer rules, it is all about transfer rules.

a month or two back it was posted that Deonte Burton was transferring back to MPS.

I stated that i was very concerned with this.  I fear that it will make for Clearinghouse issues, Competiton issues, focus issues, and allow for hangers on, etc.  My concern that Deonte Burton would never attend MU went from 0% to 50%.

Based on this info.  My concern with Deonte remains the same.  I hope I am wrong.

In regard to Burton, Mike Miller said he was a good student, I believe he attended the schools for a fulll year and did not leave Mid year, and The fact that MU has 2 years to make sure he is taking the right classes that the clearinghouse wants to see.  He should have no problems what so ever.   Its much harder for guys who leave Midyear or Mid semester and guys that commit to schools in Nov of there sr year. They only have one semester and summer to make sure they have everything in place.  I'm sure Buzz and Deonte are fully on the same page on what classes he should take, his Jr and SR year and over the summer between Jr/Sr year. IMO. I think him being back in Milwaukee increases the chances that he will be at MU in 2013 compared to decrease.

I hope you are right.  Wonderful player, seems like a super kid.  Unfortunately the MPS is a cesspool that has an amazing ability to drown everthing it touches.

Burton will be eligible and play this season.

I may be wrong, but WIAA eligibility issues based on school transfers have nothing to do with Clearinghouse or NCAA eligibility issues based on academic requirements.

Plus, the Nolan and Burton situations are not alike.

i understand that....my concerns with burton really have nothing to do with wether or not he is eligible to play in 25 hs basketball games.  My real concerns is he is no longer cloistered in a great basketball and academic situation far removed from the hangers on that can tear  or wear down the potential of a kid from the inner city.  Additionally, I have zero confidence in the ability for the counselors in a MPS school to work with a potential collge athlete to ascertain that he will be eligible.  Case in point...Dwight BUycks.

For those that dont know the Dwight Buycks story...he had the GPA and the SAT to be D1 eligible.  However, his HS counselor assigned him his classes and assured him he was taking all the necessary core classes to be D1 eleigible.   The Clearinghouse later informed him that he had not taken the necessary core classes for Freshman eligibility as he was packing his bags for Bradley university.

I think the fact that Burton is already committed and will be working with MU's athletic department to make sure he is taking the right courses will make the difference between him and Buycks.  Was Buycks much of a prospect out of high school?  I can't remember...

He originally signed with Bradley and was considered a good get for them.

hopefully, MU is allowed to be fully involved with that sort of thing.

For context see Will gates at St. Joe versus Arthur Agee at MArshall

My daughter is being recruited for a non-revenue sport.  Many of the schools asked for her transcript, had their compliance officer review and made recommendations on classes.  Fortunately, she attends a good high school and was already on track to take those courses.  They broke it down, looked at her GPA in the qualifying courses and her ACT score.  Told her what she needs to do.

I suspect MU will be all over that with Burton to make sure he is taking the proper courses.

Aren't all women's sports non-revenue?

Other than basketball at Tennessee (and maybe UCONN?) I'd guess yes.

Looks like his second appeal was also denied...

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/preps/duffel10-ib3020m-133585398.html

DENIED: Milwaukee Riverside basketball player Phillip Nolan's second appeal to gain eligibility to play this season has been denied by WIAA, Tigers athletic director Rick Johnson said. Nolan, a senior who is drawing interest from Marquette and other Division I schools, will be allowed to practice with the team, however.

Nolan played two seasons at Milwaukee Vincent, but he attended prep school last season before returning home and enrolling at Riverside.

I'm not familiar with WIAA transfer rules, but would it have made a difference if he went back to Vincent instead of switching to Riverside?
