I know that a lot of MU students think Notre Dame is a rival, but after talking to some Notre Dame folks about they get extra hyped up if MU goes to the Joyce Center, the conclusion is generally that they don't. Anyone else have know if there's anything there?
If anyone votes for UW-Insert City Name

This may be an unpopular view but I tend to think Depaul is much more of a rival than the others. Notre Dame and Wisco are big time football programs, where DePaul is a fellow urban Catholic mid to small size university. You also have the Milwaukee vs Chicago thing going.
UW-M and UWGB? Ridiculous.
If you want to fill out your options, go with DP, Louisville, Cinci. Add the rest of the Big East and anyone we've played in a game of consequence in the past 10 years. After that, UW-M might be appropriate.
I want to beat Notre Dame, but I do not care what they do when they not are playing us. I want Wisconsin to lose everytime they play.

How about when they play ND?
a tie...? jk
Depends on the year probably. Or maybe how we did against one vs. the other.
Make no mistake tho...NEVER cheering for one to win. Just cheering for one to lose a little bit more than the other... ;D
DePaul is as much as a "rival" as University of Detroit. Played 'em 88 times.

Do I take it that you are not a native of the Badger state?
Wisconsin has always been our biggest rival. It's like the Bear-Packer games!
Wow...DePaul doesn't even make the list? Either the thread-starter is too young or it's simply that the mighty have really, really fallen.

No, I'm from WI.

+1
The fact that UW-Madison is winning shows that the traffic here is pretty young in general, though.
The thought of Glenn Rivers' half-court game-winner still brings a huge smile to my face. And the thought of John Paxson burning us still pisses me off. For my money, I get more of a kick out of us beating ND than anybody else. I was thrilled when we ended up in the Big East together.
After that, obviously Wisconsin, but Louisville has been pretty intense these last few years.
DePaul? It's hard to have a legit rivalry when one team is so much better than the other.

No offense but both sentences are completely wrong.
As someone who has grown up in Wisconsin and have a lot of friends who go/went to UW, they are the team I want to beat the most and always cheer against them. I'd probably put Louisville second after all the great games we've had against them.
ND because of their arrogance and Clay breaking out home streak. Digger drove me nuts and still does, Kelly Tripuka with his crying I could go on and on.

Al commented on this in 1974--he said all you have to do to keep the MU alums happy is beat Wisconsin. So, other than the Al/Digger/Ray years, it is Sconnie.
Has to be divided into Non-Conference and Conference if you ask me....ok move along now.
You have to give it to Bucky, if you're phrasing it as whose a "natural" rival. There's nothing natural about ND.
Actually, I personally get more juiced about ND because I go back to the days of the "four independents" when Al and Digger gave each other such a hard time. However, the occasional trolling from the Wisconsin faithful does give UW more current bite.

Hmm. Must be the generational difference. In my youth, it was the Packers, Badgers in anything except BB where it was the Warriors, for me.
Saint Paul Warrior - if you don't think the Badgers are Marquette's best rival and the Bears aren't the Packers most hated rival, what teams are?
As a Marquette alum and current ND student, basketball takes a HUGE backseat to football clearly, but I would say MU is amongst their top bball rivals. The fans here HATE that MU fans take over the Joyce center, and that somewhat motivates ND fans to treat the ND-MU game as a big deal.
Kinda depends on the sport, doesn't it?
I'd be curious how this breaks down by state.
My hypothesis is that the WI game is more important to those who live here and have to listen to the bleating coming from Madison.
In my day....'78 - '82:
1) ND by a big margin
2) DePaul (Aguirre, Cummings)
3) UW @ Madison
