Title: Is West Virginia serious?
Post by: BCHoopster on October 25, 2011, 11:20:30 PM
I think this is the demise of West Virginia to go play in the big 12.  There is no rivalry base anywhere close, the closest school is 875 miles.  Are they serious?
I can understand the football issue but how about the other sports.  Every trip is 3 to 4 days out west, do they really care about the student athlete?  I can
not see going to school there, no rivalries, just long plane rides.   Ridiculous, good bye and good night to West Virginia sports.

This brings up an interesting issue, are schools in these mega conferences going to start dropping more non-revenue sports due to travel issues?  Thereby creating less opportunity for student athletes as a whole.

They could drop sports but with title IX must have as many women's scholarships as men's, so that is a good number of schollies to match the 73 (?) on a football team.
Big conference require a number of teams. In the big east it is 14, a major hurdle for mu as we had to count indoor and outdoor track as 2 before adding lacrosse.

The leaked memo on the potential 32-team football conference left wvu out under the assumption they were going big 12, so at least it sounds like they were up front.

Plenty of people speculated MU would struggle in the BE. We did not. WVU will compete just fine. It is a survival game for the football schools and they made the right move.

It's getting ridiculous?

Count me as one who believes that WVU football is going to get KILLED week in, week out in that conference.  They're "just good enough" in the BE.

One thing you have to consider is how it effects recruting. I would think being so far outside their conference foot print would negatively effect their recruiting.

Didn't they just get hammered by one of the very best teams in the ACC - Syracuse?
