Title: Buzz' media day presser was awesome

If you have time, you should watch it.  Gets really good about halfway through.

A few choice quotes:

"Media day is that start of when I don't sleep, when I rarely eat the right things, when I gain a lot of weight, and when my profanity level is at an all-time high."

"Chris Otule was the worst basketball player over 6' 2" in the HISTORY of Texas HS basketball, and now he's middle of the pack in the best conference in the country."

"Davante as a high school player weighed more than you and me and our parents put together."

"You know what bothers me more than anything? Everybody jumped on by the time we got to Newark.  Everybody was rootin' by the time we got to Newark.  But there were a lot of people that jumped off when we were playing St. John's at home.  There were a lot of people that completely jumped off because I spoke to our team too long the previous time we were in Newark at Seton Hall... our team was comprised of two recruiting classes.  Our whole team.  Two.  That is like me eating french fries every day for breakfast.  That's how unhealthy that is.  I can only tell you that for our players having went through all that they went through considering they were comprised of two recruiting classes, for them to be able to even get to Newark says an unbelievable amount about who they are.  And because I didn't address where my locale was gonna be, that really bothered me, in the same manner that it bothered me that we have too many junior college guys.  I don't ever wanna be labeled, and just because I'm from Texas doesn't mean I should work in Texas.  That doesn't mean that I have anything against Texas... I handled it the same way I've handled everything.  I care about those kids and I always believe it.  I'm not gonna leave Junior Cadougan, I'm not leavin' Chris, I'm not leavin' Jae, I'm not leavin' DJ, and no dollar amount is gonna make me leave 'em.  And that may mean we get our ass beat all year long this year, I don't know, but like momma says don't mess with happy, and I'm happy."

He also addressed graduation, stating that of the 10 seniors that have been through in his time, 7 have graduated, 2 more are enrolled in the fall to graduate, and one more is enrolled in fall and spring classes to graduate.  Mentioned the schedule, that it was probably too tough last year at the start relative to the talent and experience we had at the time, but that he wants it to be a hallmark of our program that we go up against the best possible competition every year.

That last long quote above was f*cking incredible.  It was a complete blast at all the short-sighted morons on boards like this that jump off the ledge after every little setback.  Sure it sucks to lose, but if you haven't noticed, Buzz' teams improve EVERY year from start to finish.  Year one we lost to Dayton and people shouted NIT.  Then we blasted through the conference, rising to a top ten rank and were on cruise control until DJ went down.  Year two we started Big East play at 2-5 with a loss to DePaul mixed in and everyone wrote us off again.  Surprise!  We hit our stride, the offense looked like a well-oiled machine, and we got a 6 seed.  Last year we lost some heartbreakers in the non-conference then went .500 in a league that sent 11 teams to the tournament and everyone bitched and moaned, said that we sucked and complained about our JUCO's until we won huge neutral court games against WVU, Xavier and Cuse then everyone wanted back in.

We have a tough non-con schedule again, and there will be starting lineup shuffles early on.  We will likely have some tough early season losses against some great teams.  When that happens, please refer to past history before you come on here to bitch.  The man clearly knows what he is doing and knows how to get a team humming at the right time.

Can't wait for the season to start!!

Amen - yet those of us who back the team consistently, support it, call for perspective during the overreactions after loses get called fanboys, blue/gold colored glasses, etc.  But I guess many fans simply lack perspective, and have a limited sense of recognizing the reality of their team.  Some fans just won't be happy if a team doesn't go 36-0, 162-0, 16-0...whatever.

Great point Buzz made about last year's team comprising of just 2 recruiting classes...yet we had people wanting to throw the team/Buzz under the bus at certain points last year due to a 9-9 finish.  Pretty amazing how spoiled and entitled some success makes some fans.

Anyone who has played competitive sports or had  a child or family member at a high level would not bitch or should I say overly criticize college players. They would understand the effort and how things work out. Yes u have your opinion but make it an opinion and not a crtical comment about a person.

Link seems to be gone now. There's a 2-minute start to the presser, and that's all. For anyone that missed it, however, here's the full Madness preview video. Man...Crowder just has a look to him. When his eyes shift at the end, he looks like he's about to take someone out. Badass.

Can't wait for the season to start!!

As far as the posted comments...

Otule is proof that we can develop big men. Buzz has really coached him up, and I have great faith in him in the middle. Imagine if he had the talent of a Philip Jurick, John Brandenburg, or Xavier Gibson, all top-100 guys from his class that never really panned out. I think if you took that ability and combined it with the effort CO has put in, he'd be a John Wooden Award finalist. Instead, he's a solid Big East starter. Not bad at all. Can't wait to see what he does over the next two years.

As far as the criticisms of the keyboard jockeys...well, I went back to my thoughts after SJU last February, and I stand by them. That game was poorly coached. We never dictated tempo in our own building, should have tried changing defenses, and Buzz took the air out when we got within single digits by calling a timeout as the crowd got back into it. The booing was still (and always is) uncalled for. These aren't professional players, these are college kids giving up far more than many realize to play for us. I still expected an NCAA berth at that point, I know many didn't. But the team looked like they quit that day. It was very uncharacteristic from a Buzz team, and I hope not to see it again.

But while the booing was uncalled for, I think it's ludicrous to say you can't criticize. There were numerous problems with that game. I don't care about the postgame after Seton Hall. I think one east coast reporter got upset...did anyone else care? But there were legitimate concerns after St. John's. I have to imagine Buzz had legitimate concerns that came up in coaches' meetings afterwards. We got killed by the press and couldn't hold on to the ball. Is it wrong to discuss that? Are we supposed to just say "$#!+ happens, let's move on with our day and be happy"?

Sorry, but no. Jimmy Butler, Joe Fulce, Chris Otule were 2008 recruits. Dwight Buycks, Junior Cadougan, Erik Williams, and DJO were 2009 recruits. Vander Blue, Davante Gardner, Jae Crowder, and Jamail Jones were 2010 recruits. That's three recruiting classes. I love Buzz, but that's a patently false statement to say that we were composed of just two recruiting classes last year.

However, I'm glad to hear Buzz reaffirm his commitment to Marquette. I'm committed to him as a coach, I think the rest of us are as well, and honestly, I'm simply proud of this team. I think Buzz has done a great job with these young men, and while I hope to see the success continue, I am so proud of the way this team conducts themselves on and off the court that I can accept the rough times (14 losses) with the good (Sweet 16).

All that said, to address the end of JM's post, I do expect to see improvement over the year, but I don't think those tough losses are givens. Bo's teams always play well, but they have some big losses to overcome, and we catch them a month into the season. Can Mike Brusewitz, Tim Jarmusz, and Evan Anderson replace Jon Leuer and Keaton Nankivil? Will Jordan Taylor thrive when he doesn't have outlet options like he did last year? I think the Badgers will be a team that improves as the season goes on, but could have some rocky moments. We can beat them this year at the Kohl. Vandy and Washington will be tough, but are beatable. I feel much better about our odds against our quality opponents this year than I did last year. I'm just hoping we don't overlook a Jacksonville or Northern Colorado.

Even still, not everyone who criticizes the team is a "short-sighted moron". There were legitimate concerns throughout the season. Our inability to beat a quality opponent in the non-con, our struggles against fellow (then) mid-tier Big East teams like Georgetown, St. John's. and Cincinnati. The loss to SHU. You aren't a moron to criticize or be disappointed. We love this team and want to see the best from them. I think there are limits to how far anyone should go, but pointing out that there are areas for improvement should be acceptable.

I totally agree.  I'm not saying there *will* be losses or let-downs, I'm just saying if and when they come don't over-react like last year.  Or the year before.  Or the year before that.  I think this year's team has the potential to sweep the non-con, but if we lose by 2 at LSU on an off shooting night I'm not gonna throw Buzz and the staff under the bus, nor should anyone else, because I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt over the past three years.  And I definitely think there is room for criticism, but it turned into all-out bashing at several points last year, with certain posters harping on negatives (and perceived negatives like the number of JUCO players) non-stop.  That's what I think we should guard against as a fan base.  Level-headed criticism from posters like you, Dr. Blackheart and Bama are more than welcome and make for a good board.

Saying Buzz had 3 recruiting classes is as patently false as saying he had 2. The crown jewels of the 2008 class were Ty Taylor and Nick Williams, both top 100 guys. Losing the top 2 guys from a class makes it fair to say he lost much (most?) of 2008. So more accurately Buzz had approximately 2.5 recruitng classes last year.

Thanks brew...I generally agree with everything you say.  I like about 95% of what Buzz is about.  Not very pleased with the defensive performance of his teams however.  I know what he is *trying* to do, but if you don't have the personnel to do it, well...don't do it.

Major contributors from three classes. He also lost Maymon and Smith (midseason) so does that make it 1.5 recruiting classes? No. Of his top six players (JFB, Otule, DJO, Buycks, Crowder, Blue) there were two from each class. We still had a future NBA player and a full-time starter from 2008. It was 3 classes.

I have to completely disagree. This is part of what is wrong with our society. We don't care about what is proper or not. All we care about is whether we can get our opinion out. There is no ownership nowadays. Instead, it is a rush to the keyboard. How about people take a little bit of pride in what they write? Where have our standards gone?

I am sorry, but if you don't care enough about ensuring that what you are writing is grammatically correct, then why should I take seriously what you write?

Nothing wrong with sometimes disagreeing with coaching strategy or being disappointed in outcomes. That's what being a fan is all about. Brew doesn't have to defend himself and neither does 98% of the rest of the board. By the same token, I don't blame Buzz for calling out "fans" who boo the players, call them names (chokers, etc.) or jump off and on the bandwagon at a dizzying rate. And if Buzz gets agitated with "fans" who (with no evidence) attack his character that's okay too.

The problem with booing is that it doesn't discern. When you boo, it goes to the players, the coach, the assistants, everyone involved with the program. A chant like "Du-kiet Sucks" might be better, but when it comes to booing, I just can't abide it.

And there's a big difference between bitching and booing. Complaining about what defensive set we're using, how poorly we attack the press, why Player X is getting 25 mpg, etc is one thing. But to lump those feelings at everyone down to the last walk-on on the bench?
