Title: So where do we stand with the last scholarship?
Post by: GGGG on October 09, 2011, 04:25:22 PM
It seems like, with Mgargoba off the board, we are focused on Matt Willms, Aaron Durley or Philip Nolan.  There has been no word on Durley since his visit, which I am not interpreting as a good sign.  Is Willms going to take an official visit?

Is there anyone else coming in?

Nobody does articles on Marquette recruiting so hard for Durley to comment.

I've seen a couple of times on Twitter that Nolan is coming in some time this week. I'd presume it would be for Madness.

According to Mark Miller, Philip Nolan "really enjoyed" his visit to Oregon over the weekend.  So since he has already been to Clemson and Oregon, and no commitment has been made yet, I guess its a good thing that his official to MU is this week.

Clemson's Brad Brownell visited Nolan in-home, but I don't believe Nolan visits Clemson until the weekend after Marquette Madness.

Ah...so we are the dreaded "in between" visit.  Well maybe he will be so impressed that he will cancel his Clemson trip right???  Honestly it's probably going to come down to how much playing close to home is going to mean to him.  I also hope that he has good academic advisors at Riverside (pretty decent for a MPS high school) that are making sure that he has all his bases covered to qualify no matter where he goes.

So we should lock him in a room with Jamil to explain what it's like to go from Wisconsin to Oregon. :D

I wouldn't doubt that Jamil will have a conversation about going thousands of miles away for school and what means for his family, etc.

Excellent point.  Nolan will enjoy playing for Marquette and Wisconsin fans and his family much more than at a school 1,000 miles away.  And, he can earn playing time at Marquette at the 4 or 5.  We need a big.

You cats are underestimating what playing in Nike's backyard and playing in the new facility on that funky floor can mean to a dude.

I think there is a big difference between Wilson and Nolan. Wilson played at home during high school and went away for college. Wilson found out he rather play at home. Nolan went away (at least last year) for high school, so he knows what it is like to be away. My guess is the fact that Nolan looking at Clemson and Oregon, which are not close to home is an indication that going away does not matter to him. Besides that Wilson played for a different coach at Oregon.

Probably right, but when you consider that he came home for his senior year, and just doesn't seem willing to take Marquette off his list, maybe that's an indicator that staying home does matter to him.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if I had to guess, I'd say that if we get Nolan, he'll commit no later than Tuesday or Wednesday. If he goes to Clemson, I don't think we'll end up with him.

For anyone who's followed both Nolan and Mitchell Carter from a few years ago could you compare/contrast their games and potential collegiate talent?

That makes sense, but what we do not know is if he is Buzz's plan A. Buzz may be happy he is planning on visiting Clemson before making a decsion.

Seems like Nolan and Willms are the two guys getting the most attention. Not sure of their timetables. Wouldn't surprise me if we stuck with our current class until spring. A lot can change between now and then. I'm sure Buzz is in on some guys we have no idea he's after.

Think about this one.  When was the last time Marquette got a verbal from a Marquette Madness official visitor?  Vander?  Madness hasn't been a great recruiting tool to get verbals over the years and Vander may be just one of only a couple if he isn't the only one.

Mitchell Carter was a plodder, a poor man's Chris Otule.    Nolan is athletic and tall but skinny.

True, but Juan did verbal right before Madness last year, and despite just taking an official a few weeks earlier, flew back out on his own dime to attend. Has Burton ever attended Madness before? What about Jamil Wilson? I thought Jamail Jones was here for Madness, along with Vander and Tarik Black (how awesome would a Black and Blue backcourt have been?).

So they had one right after Madness two years ago...and one just before Madness last year.

We had a ton of recruits here last year...maybe Buzz has changed his tune either because we don't have as many scholies to give, or maybe because he found it to be ineffective.

Not very.  Black is a 6'8" PF/C.

My point is that Marquette Madness hasn't been the selling weekend to get undecided recruits that many people expect it to be.  Even Vander was ready to commit to Marquette before he took that visit.

I honestly can't remember a recruit making a committment because of the festivities.  We've either had earlier verbals, Anderson included, or guys commit from the Fish Fry scrimmage on to signing day.  In fact, I've seen some guys come in for visits and you could tell they were just making an appearance and already had another school in their sites and I include Trey McDonald last year. McDonald looked like he wanted to be back in Battle Creek, Michigan that night.

I just checked out the scout.com website and read that Marquette had made 10 scholarship offers in 2012 with two verbal accepted and 10 offers for 2013 with one accepted.

How can we have so many outstanding offers when we only have one opening for each year?

every school does this. Some offers are "We will take you anytime anywhere" others are more conditional.

Because you can't put all of your eggs in one basket, a la, Joe Wolf, Billingsley, Schumpert, Stemler, JaJuan Johnson.     I am sure Buzz will happily take anyone he has offered, but I am also sure he would prefer some over others.

And--some believe--Nolan is also a "headcase".  Just why he's a headcase hasn't been stated for the record that I've seen, although mentions of his many different high schools is brought up.
