I can't help but think that we are in a better position than UC right now... Yes, they have a football team - but is it one that a marquee conference is going to want? I'm not so sure.
At least now we have a workable back-up plan with all of the hoops only schools. Thoughts?

We don't have the cost of a football team, but are not in the position to be at the table for those big conference payouts.
Not sure about UC, but what about schools like UConn...who have poured all sorts of resources into building a football team. Moving up from FCS to FBS...building a new stadium...going to a BCS bowl.
And in the span of the last 10 months, they lose their coach to Maryland, and watch their BCS conference crumble down around them. They did *everything* right....and it likely won't be enough.
This is an interesting question. I've had the thought recently - what if Louisville and Cincy decided to scrap their football teams? I know it won't happen - but they'd save a ton of overhead operating expense - to where you don't need the large conference payouts.
Lville is NO DOUBT a basketball school first, and football 2nd - same with Cincy. Man, how awesome would that basketball conference be with Cincy and Ville, joining the other basketball only Big East schools??!!

They do not have to give up their football teams, they just need to accept not playing football in a BCS conference. They at present time are not national title contenders in football anyways, so do they really need to be in a power football conference? Assuming they realize that they will not leave for Big 12.

I think one of the problems with this line of thinking is that Cinci is just two years removed from a 12-1 season with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl. I suspect they're not ready to give up on big-time football.

Yes. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
How about a school like South Florida, if there is no Big East football, where do they go?
As long as the BE basketball schools stay together and add 2 to 4 schools, things will be fine for Marquette.
