Getting some interest from MU, has an offer from Illinois

Heading into the July evaluation period 6'9 2013 power forward Gavin Schilling from DeLaSalle Institute in Chicago was the best high school basketball prospect from Illinois that virtually no one knew about.  That is hardly the case any longer, as college coaches who have watched him in open gyms during the month of September have quickly found out just how talented he is.

As a result, Schilling has landed his first D1 scholarship offer courtesy of the University Of Illinois and head coach Bruce Weber.  Schilling took an unofficial visit to the Champaign campus on September 24.  There is no question that Weber and the Illini coaching staff are making Schilling a huge priority with respect to their 2013 recruiting class.

In addition to Illinois, Schilling is now drawing heavy recruiting interest from a number of other D1 programs, including Northern Illinois (a school that Schilling has also visited), Loyola-Chicago, Illinois State, Providence, Notre Dame, DePaul, Marquette, Xavier, and Iowa.

We got our first look at Schilling this past June at the DePaul University Team Camp, where he was absolutely spectacular before sustaining a broken wrist that kept him out of action for the remainder of the summer.  We believe that he has more up side than several of the more highly touted frontcourt prospects in the 2013 class from Illinois and could end up being just as good as his high school teammate--6'8 2013 forward Alex Foster.

From what we have seen, we think that Schilling brings a lot of positive intangibles to the table.  He has a bit of a mean streak in him which he channels in a positive way--it seems to motivate him to play hard, mix things up and not back down from a challenge.  Schilling also has the ability to face up and knock down shots from 3-point range although he does the bulk of his damage in the paint.

Right now, we compare Schilling to a younger version of Meyers Leonard.  Schilling has the same degree of athleticism and toughness as Leonard although he is not quite as well-rounded (remember, however, that Leonard didn't really begin to round into form until the summer prior to his senior year at Robinson).  One thing is for certain--Schilling's list of scholarship offers figures to start going through the roof once more college coaches get a chance to see him play.
