Title: Copycats?
Post by: ringout on October 03, 2011, 11:24:21 AM
Attended UW FB game on Saturday night. (With other MU alums, I might point out)

Just before Bucky takes the field, a collage of nostalgic images from UW football past appears on the scoreboard...mixed in with preesnt Badger players...to the tune of.....

You guessed it....Where the Streets Have No Name

Yup.  Was there too.  Not going to lie, thought they did it a lot better by playing their intro video before they ran out of the tunnel and then kept the song playing while showing them run out of the tunnel.  It would be better with a 52 member football team anyway, but I thought that was pretty cool.  And I hate Badger football.

When Nebraska were doing their "Go Big Red" chear the guys (overheard 1 of them saying they graduated in '80 so at least into their 50s) were going off about it.  "That's bullsh!t!  Get a new color!  You can cheer 'Go Big Yellow' or something!  You come into OUR conference because you want more money and you do that?"  They were dead serious about it.  Hilarious.  Absolutely hilarious.  Surprised they "allow" Indiana and Ohio State to wear red in the Big 10.  Wisconsin already owns that color...

Traditions get stolen all the time, Wisconsin seems to do so more than others, or I notice it more since I'm not a supporter but live with a rabid Badger fan.  The sad thing is that Wisconsin has a lot of cool, unique traditions so they don't need to steal them but seem to anyway.  I think its largely a function of schools wanting to have the "best" in game entertainment.

Probably the same people who correct others by saying "it's Cardinal and white, thank you."

The usual.  So so.  She is super hot about 5% of the time, though (when I'm watching the hotel video).

Heh...I was there too and it was the first thing that entered my mind.  "They stole our song!"

But I must admit, it did get the crowd going, especially with the cameras showing them walking through the tunnel before they run out onto the field.  And yeah, you can't really duplicate that with a basketball team.

I'm pretty sure our basketball team runs through a tunnel before going onto the court...

<sigh>  I know that.

I think it is a little different when you have 80+ football players than 13 basketball players.

Attention UW, please...PLEASE take it. I hate every second of it. I become physically and emotionally upset every time I hear it. I can't think of a softer, lamer, more mainstream song that is against everything I believe in.

Good, then let's just play "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain and Tennille.

Jeez...not one of my favorites, but you make it sound like the Pina Colada song or something.

What are MU ball fans even doing at UW football game? As for Erin...anytime, anywhere.

....Got a little carried away there. I really dislike U2. I started a thread a long while ago asking about changing the intro song. Tons of responses about unoriginal phrase "getting chills" when that song starts. It seems that I was in the minority.

Grew up in Madison going to games.  My brother had an extra ticket.  I drove to Wisconsin for the weekend.  Sue me.

Been a Bucky football fan since childhood.  It is a great environment for college football.  Hate Bucky(Becky) hoops.

I grew up behind the cardinal curtain myself.  However, a few days after I got my acceptance letter to MU my local Salvation Army got a box full of UW apparel.

See... that's one of the things I like about Marquette: the way MU inspires you to help others and help the less fortunate.  Ipso facto, if you still root for Bucky, your actions fly in the face of cura personalis.

In addition to donating Bucky gear, I picked up one of my favorite new shirts the other week: A TCU Rose Bowl shirt.  Some other MU guys and I wore them to a pickup basketball game in Madison.  When someone suggested we go shirts/skins, I suggested we go Awesome shirts/shirts.

Had Bucky tickets for the Rose Bowl and cheered for TCU
Did accept offered brats and beer though. Am I a hypocrite?

Yea and Wisconsin defiantly stole our "Jump Around" bit that we do at games.  Look every school/professional team will steal or copy what other schools/team do so they can entertain fans at games, its standard. However if Wisconsin's B-ball team did a "Pray Video" then that would be stealing.

Nobody's saying we haven't "stole" songs/traditions from other schools.  That's the Becky fans who do that.  That's why it's ironic, and thus we point it out, that they played "Where the Streets Have No Name" with their introduction video.

I was at the game and commented when they played that video and song as well.  It wasn't so much that they "stole" our idea, as much as it was that I recalled how much those puritans of sports that call themselves Badger fans ridiculed MU when we started doing that.  They talked about how lame it was as they got into a circle and gushed over Mike Lecrone and the Badger Band.

The Badgers have done similar things at the Kohl hole for basketball as well - with the history ... the crowd get's teary eyed as they watch the Badgers cut the bottom out of the peach basket after their NCAA Championship Game.

Well... at least there's one thing we can say that everyone stole from us and MU stole from nobody.  How many schools can say that.
