Wisconsin education officials have ordered a high school to change its sports nickname from the Indians.
An alumnus of Berlin High School north of Milwaukee complained to the state Department of Public Instruction about the use of the nickname. That opened the door to the state ordering the school to change it.
DPI found the nickname is race-based and held a hearing in August. School officials argued that the nickname was not race-based, but the state has denied the school's appeal.
The school district has one year to make the change. Superintendent Bob Eidahl said the district will likely form a committee of students and community members to gather ideas for a new mascot.
Was Berlin High School doing anything to disrespect the Indian culture? I'll never understand people that think its not possible to have a race-based name be completely respectful towards the people they are representing.
Or the fact that it only takes one person to complain in order to force a school to change their name.
Apparently if one person doesnt like it that means everyone cant like it? ::)
FYI: The Berlin Indian helmet and Logo is pretty sweet. I wish I had a picture but the colors are great!!
Soon PETA will be filing lawsuits against any team that uses an animal nickname.

I doubt it.
But that's a great "straw man" argument, though. Wait, why is this thread on this board again?
