Going to Phoenix next week, first time there. Thinking of going to Mastro's in Scottsdale. Anyone able to make a good case for Donovan's or BLT or some other place?
Looking for an original? The Pink Pony in downtown S-Dale.
Mastro's is the best I have ever been to in that area. Largest dinner bill I have ever paid though.
Mortons at Kierland Commons is good in addition to another steak place at Kierland commons which the name I cant recall. Commons is at Scottsdale road and Greenway a cool place with shops and other places to enjoy. Near Westin Hotel
My favorite restaurant I've ever been to is in Phoenix. Chinese/Mexican fusion (http://www.chinobandido.com/). I wish we had them up here... I can't tell you how often I crave their Emerald Chicken Quesadilla with jerk rice and refried beans :D
Definitely not fancy (or steak, like you asked for), but it's worth heading to one for lunch :)
This Mexican restaurant in Old Scottsdale is really good

Bag the cow and head over to AZ 88.

You like those chain restaurants with 50 locations, huh?

Sounds interesting.. have you taken them up on this offer described on their website?: "I like my job, and I will be pleased if you touch me, pat me, and rub me for good luck!"

Yes, but it cost an extra $100 to get them to touch you back. A little too expensive for semi fast-food, imo.

I don't mind them. Ruth's Chris and Flemings can both give you a real nice steak dinner. I went to Flemings in Memphis a couple of weeks ago - I know what I am going to get in a town I don't know much about. Nothing wrong with that.
Got to have BBQ when you're in Memphis. BBQ and Blues is what the town is known for
I was there three nights. Not really interested in three straight nights of BBQ.
I'm with Sultan, I typically like sticking with something I'm familiar with in a new town. I love Mastro's, love even more going with an expense account. Was mostly curious if anyone could make a case for Donovans or a similar local place.
FWIW, my national steakhouse rankings:
1. Mastro's
2. Ruth's Chris
3. Flemming's
4. Morton's
5. Smith & Wollensky
Never been to Capital Grille. If I had to rank Gibsons (since it's not national), probably tied for second. Wildfire is hit/miss. Sullivans is meh to me.
Charleys in Orlando, FL a chain (although just in Orlando) is amazing, and by far my favorite. Not an AZ steakhouse, but it seems we are past that now anyway.
I have only been to Mastro's in Scottsdale. In fact, I didn't know it was a chain until you mentioned it. I prefer Flemings to Ruth's Chris because their wine selection is better.
Why not just go to Hooters on ASU's campus? It is right on Mill St. which is their Water St.
I had never heard of Mastro's until about a year or so ago when they opened a location in Chicago. I've been to the one in Chicago and one in Newport Beach. Outstanding food/service both times, only way I could test out both was on the company dime.
See, if I'm doing steak in Chicago, I'm at the Chicago Chop House. Is it better than that? Also, I tend to want to get my seafood fix at Shaw's when I get to town.
Tango Sur in Chicago best steak I have ever had and pretty reasonable.
Cowboy Ciao in Scottsdale is good if you are still looking for suggestions. Great wine list and really good food. It is Southwest comfort food? Creative, but the emphasis is on good food.
