Title: Butler headed overseas?
Post by: brewcity77 on August 06, 2011, 08:17:09 PM
Saw this on ESPN...

Quote from: ESPNAgent Happy Walters [Rogue Sports] represents Amar'e Stoudemire [Knicks], Wilson Chandler [Nuggets], Corey Brewer [Mavs], Larry Sanders [Bucks], DeJuan Blair [Spurs], Derrick Caracter [Lakers], Earl Clark {Magic], Shawne Williams [Knicks] and rookies Jimmy Butler (Bulls], Iman Shumpert [Knicks] and Lavoy Allen [76ers].

There have been a good number of NBA players that have signed contracts with teams outside the U.S. and Walters believes more deals are coming.

Walters tweeted Friday night: "I can confidently say that more NBA or RFA [restricted free agents] and UFA [unrestricted free agents] are going to start signing soon in Foreign Leagues. You may even hear of some surprises this weekend. Some big names are close to giving it a shot while the silliness of the lockout continues. Stay tuned ..."

I heard Leuer is already headed overseas, probably a good option for Jimmy to get a paycheck while he waits for the lockout to be settled. My only question is if there's a risk of injury for him. Guess it's risk/reward.

Agents always come out strong in support of the players during negotiations...I'm sure some big names will go overseas, obviously some already have signed, but I'm not convinced it's going to be as popular or profitable (risk/reward) as they are making it sound.  There's only so much money to go around...

Not a bad idea for jimmy. Keep playing competitive basketball. Also a great experience to live abroad.

Jimmy will have insurance to cover an injury.

Anyone know how those insurance policies work?  I would think he would have a value assigned to him, but his value would be hard to prove right now other than what he'll make with his first contract.  All the players have commented that they understand the financial risk which leads me to think the insurance isn't going to cover their actual cost?

The first round draft picks are not going to play over seas.  They will have guranteed contract6s once the season starts, and they won't put that in jeopardy.  2nd round picks do not have guaranteed contracts, so it makes sense that some of those players might try a stint overseas, because that is where most of them will end up anyway.

disagree....they will or can sign contracts oversees that have opt outs should the NBA resume.  in the meantime they are playing and getting paid.  Insurance covers any risk of getting hurt.

NBA players could go overseas and do pretty well financially and really stick it to the owners.

The big names will get big money oversees and the young lower paid guys can do fine in Europe, the guys that will take the really big hit are the older players living on huge guaranteed contracts that no one really wants.

I live in reality where players only play if they have contracts... and there is actually an NBA season, which there isn't.

But when will the season start? In December? January? February? Or maybe not until fall of 2012 or beyond? These guys are unemployed for the time being and playing in Europe will get them a lot more money than they'll get any other way. I'm not sure that the guarantee of an eventual contract will help with their immediate bills.
