18. Marquette: Darius Johnson-Odom deserves a lot more ink and Buzz Williams has a very tough team.

They are frequently referred to as Big Red... and have had cheers for decades saying, "Go Big Red".
More good pub, especially from a guy who usually ignores us until early March if we don't have a non-con with Duke. I just hope this team plays to their ability and doesn't try to play to expectations. Everyone ranking us in the top 20 is nice, but I just want Buzz to keep them grounded. Believing your own press is how you lose to a Jacksonville or Northern Colorado.

Wisconsin is typically called Red and the chant is Let's Go Red. Nebraska has always been known as Big Red.
I'm not sure how I feel about this ranking. With Buzz, it's always been an "us against the world" type mentality. I think this year will say a lot about Buzz and how well he can handle success. I believe in him and I know he can do it. The underdog card is a great mentality to have when your a team like MU. This year, we will be favored in a lot of these games and I hope that the players dont see that and just go through the motion. Its going to be an awesome year though!

As the son of two Badgers, and living 15 minutes from Camp Randall, I think I know what they chant.
Additionally:
QuoteThis is the game where Nebraska's historic conference switch becomes reality, and for this first game, it's going to seem like being teleported into a parallel universe and having to square off with the Huskers' alter ego. The colors are the same, the uniforms are strikingly similar, and the fans of both teams chant "Go Big Red!" And if you believe some prognosticators, it'll also be a preview of the very first Big Ten Championship game. Both teams had successful seasons that ended in disappointment. Wisconsin lost to TCU in the Rose Bowl 21-19 after a two point conversion failed with two minutes left in the game.

I grew up in Madison, have been to dozens of Badger football and hockey games, and I have heard both. "Go Big Red" is an "older" chant..."Let's go Red" is a more recent (post-1990) chant.

This would be like saying that Michigan is the only school that chants, "Go Big Blue!"

We never should have changed our nickname to Golden Eagles!
Just think of the great cheer - - - "Let's Go Gold!"

While I do respect a good pun, I disagree. I was a freshman when they changed the name. There was almost a riot. However, I did see someone wearing a shirt that had a golden calf on it with the marquee reading, "Gold. The Jesuits Idolize it." that was a sweet shirt, but a turrible name change.
Also, when I was there, we had a vote on the name. I personally voted for the Jumping Jesuits. (also, I think the election was fixed, as most people I spoke to said that they did not vote for Golden Eagles, but thats just my opinion.)

Having a son that IS a Badger, living 10 minutes from Camp Randall and working in the shadows of the Kohl Center, I am not so certain that you do. Never heard "Go Big Red". Have heard, and see the cheerleaders hold the signs for "Let's Go Red". I gave you the benefit of the doubt before, now, not so much. Just plain wrong.

Every home game means a performance for both the Badger football team and the Red Squad. The day begins with hopping on the Bucky Wagon and getting the whole town filled with Badger pride before the big game. The Wagon Crew drives around downtown Madison and campus spreading Badger spirit, but no Bucky Run can be complete without driving around the Wisconsin Capitol's Farmer's Market as the team chants "Let's Go Red... Peppers!" as they each take a bite out of a red pepper from the market. This is a tradition that has been carried on before each home game. The trip ends at Camp Randall where the team then warms up for the game.

That makes more sense to me. Since I moved to Madison in '96, I have not heard "Go Big Red" at any games, functions ... "Let's Go Red" with the drummer leading the way is their cheer now. Perhaps they modernized it.

I responded a bit jerky as my perception to your response was that you were a bit condescending and jerky as well.

"Go Big Red" is something that was chanted in the 70s and is used by the older set. "Let's Go Red" is what they currently chant at games.

I'm sorry if proving you wrong seemed jerky, it wasn't intended to be.
Again, I never said they didn't chant "Let's Go Red". That would be putting words in my mouth. I simply stated, and proved, that "Let's Go Big Red" is a UW chant as well. Old or not... and to this day you can buy T-shirts that say as much.

No need to apologize for being jerky, you tend to be terse and condescending frequently. I thought if you could give, you should be able to receive.
Your initial comment sure gave the impression that "Go Big Red"
is the cheer. Further, your response to mine sure dismissed the "Let's Go Red" as the chant by your commments of "...I think I know what they chant." Well, as my links have demonstrated, combined with Sultan's comments, no that is not the cheer. Has not been for 20 years or so. All I stated was that the cheer
is "Let's Go Red", which brought your typical condescending hardness response of "As the son of two Badgers, and living 15 minutes from Camp Randall, I think I know what they chant." Well, you may have
known what they
used to chant, but apparently you do not
know what they
do chant.
If you knew that "Let's Go Red" is the chant, you certainly could have simply stated that that is the current version and "Go Big Red" was the old version. Certainly would have been the simplier, less caustic approach, no?
Anyway, to avoid a chico's like thread, feel free to respond with another condescending and dismissive retort. I am through with this.
Hmmm .... and I thought Chicos and Ners were responsible for all threads gone awry.

Cool story bro. You read into stuff more than most girls I know.
How's that?
That said, I'm willing to just drop this and say you are more right than me.

Thanks for adding the thread postively as well... the homophobic remark was the icing.
I'm just happy that someone was able to one up me.
Ok ok ok ... I'm thrilled with the ranking because every ranking makes it more likely MU will be in the ESPN top 25. This means all my friends in sec country will catch our highlights in between the 6 hours of dissecting the vandy v Kentucky game and assuring me that either of them would go 9-0 in any other conference (even in years in which they are 2-3 against other conferences.
Glad vitale is finally on board! If even he jinks we are good, then we will get everyone else.

I was good with "Jumping Jesuits". Even wrote a letter to Buck Raynor saying so. He forwarded to Cords, who wrote a reply stating I should be ashamed. Really. Not kidding.

The only part of that contest that was rigged was when they told people not to write-in "Warriors" because those votes wouldn't be counted, thus discouraging pro-Warrior alums from voting...and then they counted the "Warriors" votes and presented it as data proving that alums don't want the name back.
Now that I think about it, perhaps if MU had upgraded their PR department after that debacle, they would have been better prepared to deal with the "real" issues the university recently ran into.
The "Fighting Armadillos" was also one that could not be used. I was upset about that

I am confused. Father DiUlio changed the name in 1993-4, (as you say, when you were a freshman), but the name polls and votes were during 2004-5....were you in school for a ten year period, or is the "vote", you reference some lesser known name vote closer to 1994, ie when you were there?

DiUlio ran a campus wide poll to see what nickname the students wanted, then after months of counting votes - during the summer the Administration proclaimed that Golden Eagles had won.
