Title: Back from Buzz's BBQ
Post by: OpenLook on June 29, 2011, 08:20:51 PM
The most striking observation is Devante Gardner  :o. . . he looks like he dropped 30 pounds from the end of last season. Really seemed toned; looks like a player on a mission, body-wise. Excited to see how this new and imprroved look will transition into his second BE season.
Good to see Jimmy Butler and Zar. Most of the returning players also there. Jamil Wilson seems a ligit 6-8.

I don't care about Buzz's BBQ, let's start updating some of the muscoop subjects and update the Recruiting Front Page. Boring, Boring, Boring.

Well, without Buzz's BBQ, would you know that Andre Walker is on campus for his visit??  ;)

You can do it yourself. Log into the MU Wiki.

That is, IF you have anything of value to share.

I spoke with Jamil for a long time.  Great great guy.....very personable.  He told me he is 6'6.5".  He also said he has a pterodactyl wingspan of 7'1"  :o

Also,  DJO has a 38" vertical (I had to know).....he said the Durant camp went really well and that he is now going to Lebron's camp.

I was surprised that Buzz only spoke for 3-4 minutes, mostly pointing out former/current players, then a thank you for coming, and that's all folks.

Saw Jimmy, Lazar, and coach Benford outside the Al with a recruit.....must have been Walker.  Talk about a good recruiting tool.....hanging out with 2 NBA guys.  8-)

Although,  they were locked out! lol

Too bad - it was a fun event, and lots of people were there enjoying htemselves, talking with the coaches and players and having fun.  I got the honor of speaking with Earl Tatum - the real one.  He seemed to enjoy the BBQ too.

Good to hear of the fun had by all. What is Earl Tatum up to these days?

BTW, as Buzz knows/cares about  good BBQ--- who catered/cooked the brisket?

in the area, insurance guy I believe.

recent story/this week regarding Earl:
he saw a program we originally ran on air some time back that recently re-aired, and really liked it.
contacted the producer to get a copy, who obliged.
Earl wrote a nice thank you letter, and sent a picture of him in his playing days, autographed with his player number.

after all these years, he still fancies himself a warrior!

I don't know if you saw him play in high school, but that wouldn't suprise you if you did.  VERY long player.

On a side note in regard to Jamil's height.  Jimmy measured 6-6 1/4 and 6-6 even at the Portsmith and Chicago Predraft camps.  He also had a wingspan of 6-8".  So with shoe's you can add somewhere around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inchs.  So that would put Jamil at 6-7 3/4 to 6-8.  So about 1/2 inch taller then Jimmy but with his wingspan being 5" wider his standing reach is probably 3" higher.

Just to give people some perspective.

In the photos, Buzz looks like he's joining Gardner on the diet. Noticeable to people in attendance?

Would be great to see Andre Walker lace 'em up for MU this year against Vandy. he scored the winning basket to beat us last year.

I spoke to Jamil as well and was very impressed.  Some of these guys are pretty reserved and have a hard time talking to us "old folks" but not Jamil.  He was pretty proud of his 7' 1" wing span.  Said he can "sneak up on guys to block shots".  He also told me that Juan from Cal is 6'5" and said "so he's shorter than me" adding credience to what is said above.  Anybody who goes to the Pro-Am I think is going to be impressed with Wilson's body.  He just looks like an NBA player.  So he's got the tools and the personality now if Buzz can keep him focused and working on both ends of the court he could be a solid 3 year starter.

From looking at the photos Hilltopper posted I also noticed that.  Good for both of them!

Buzz and Davante both definitely lost weight both looked very trim.  The food was great and it was very cool to be able to interact with all the old players in such a relaxed atmosphere.  This was the first time I attended and the only thing I was disappointed in was that I didn't make it to the past Buzz's BBQ events.  I'll be at all the future ones!

This year was my second time going to BUZZ BBQ and it was great.  It is always great to have the past and current players there.
