First thing that popped in my head when Tubby went to Minnesota was how long will it be until he calls Trevor and asks him to stay in-state? I believe Trevor signed his LOI but is there a change he backs out and heads up to Tubby-ville? Is it a violation for Tubby to contact a player that already signed his LOI?
Once a player signs their LOI, they would have to transfer, I believe, with the resulting loss of a year of eligibility. The LOI is something akin to a contract. While commits can be recruited up until they sign their LOI, once that guy signs, he is off limits unless he wants to transfer.
I could be wrong, but that seems to be the case from what I have observed.
Once you sign a National Letter of Intent, all other participating conferences and institutions are obligated to cease recruiting you. I don't know if or what the punishment is if Tubby were to call.
But If Mbakwe backs out, I believe he has to sit out one or two years. Unless, we give him a qualified release.
Although I think the pipeline to Minnesota players will probably be cut off I don't think it'll have as great an effect on us as Wisconsin. The badgers seem to pull most of their recruits from MN whereas we seem to be building a connection with East coast talent.
With regards to Mbakwe, Keep in mind one of the big knocks on him was his inability to recruit big-time players. He was more inclined to recruit guys that fit his system (which, incidently, is more of a big ten type of system) than high quality talent. Case in point: Taureen Green or Corey Brewer from Florida (I can't recall exactly which one) is originally from Kentucky but Tubby never showed much interest in him cuz he didn't mesh well with the system so after kentucky didn't offer Florida swooped in and took him. Same for Lofton of Tennessee, Mr. Basketball in Kentucky and he ends up not getting an offer from Kentucky and goes to Tennesse. I think Tubby will do well with Recruiting in MN his first few years but after the "shine" wears off he'll probably be back to "stealing" all the system guys from Wisconsin.
good news... thanks for the info guys!
since when has the University of Minnesota, following the tradition of most of their Big Ten brethren, ever followed any rules? The school has been a cesspool of violations.
Wisconsin has a kid that verballed to Bo recently...that is the one they have to worry about.
;D
I had a good laugh when a Illinois alum was cheering about Tenn. losing and verbally assaulting Bruce Pearl on Fri.. It's amazing how they forget that they were the ones caught cheating.
