Title: Mark Jackson's Game 4 Comment About D. Wade
Post by: Tugg Speedman on June 07, 2011, 10:45:20 PM
In the fourth quarter of game 4, Wade blocked a Tyson Chandler shot (an incredible play) and then went down to the other end and scored.

After that sequence Mark Jackson said something to the effect of "call me crazy but I've said that Wade is the third best shooting guard in the history of the NBA, after MJ and Kobe."

Jeff Van Gundy responded back simply saying "you're not crazy."

Nice praise, but obviously Jackson never saw Jerry West or Oscar Robertson play.

Oscar Robertson is my most measures considered a point guard.

And even if you concede Jerry West, that still makes him #4...which is pretty damn good.

Really? He averaged a triple double as a point gaurd?

When he was on the floor, he generally had the ball in his hands.  He certainly could play both positions though.  I guess in many ways he was the original combo guard.

The Iceman belongs in this discussion.
Nine-time all-star (12 if you count ABA), four-time scoring champ, five-time All-NBA First Team.

Hard to compare to the Big O or West. Neither had Wade athleticism or defensive ability. I'm stickin' with #3.

Hmmm ... Jerry West was first-team all-defense three times (and would have been several more had the league started the all-defense team prior to 1969).

And to think he'd be stuck in the developmental league if Pat Kennedy was his coach ;D

The block on Chandler was just an unreal play. I just starting laughing when they showed the replay it was so ridiculous.

Oscar was defintely a point guard.

Hard to compare guys from different eras but just the fact that respected and unbiased guys like Jackson and Van Gundy hold Wade in such high regard is pretty special.

Agreed. Wade is far more athletic than West. By the way, how many rings does West have?

Yes. Do you not consider Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd point guards either? Those guys are #2 and #3 on the all-time triple-double list behind the Big O and nearly everyone would consider them to be point guards. Robertson played exactly the same way, brought the ball up the floor and initiated the offense until later in his career, when he played off the ball a bit more as he lost some speed and skill.

Nine.
One as a player, eight as a scout and GM.
