After all, he's got recruiting connections in Pennsylvania (Newbill, Roseboro).

Why on earth is that guy leaving his alma mater to go to Navy? ?-(
He has done the most at Penn State. You can't win there.
Get out when the going is good. :-\

And he can win at Navy? Something tells me David Robinson isn't walking through that door any time soon...
I wonder if this puts Juwan Staten back in play. He transferred from Dayton to Penn State...maybe he'd want to bail after that.
And according to this article, he turned down another mid-major job earlier this year for more money (Bradley?) because his agent thought he could get a high-major job. (So much for agents.) So he is taking a pay-cut and stepping down the ladder because of security.

Maybe it's not all about winning for him. He's a 50something guy who's spent nearly a decade trying to do the impossible, i.e win consistently at Penn State. Could be he just decided to take a step back into a less stressful environment for the stretch run of his career. There's much worse places one could end up than Annapolis.
By leaving now, he kind of sticks it to Penn State which might be a plus for him after their vote of no confidence in him.

I don't know if he can win at Navy.
They won't kick him out the door at Navy, like they were going to do at Penn State. His seat was getting hot at Penn State 3 years ago.
According to ESPN he was told before the season that if he didn't make the NCAA in 2010/2011 he would be fired.
When he made the tourny he assumed an extension would be forthcoming.
It wasn't.
He saw the handwriting on the wall and took the Navy job(and a 200k salary cut).
any chance we get one of their seven footers?

Show me another coach who wins scoring 36 points. ;D
The guy was 4-0 against TC's Hoosiers in Indiana (2-0 in Bloomington, 2-0 in Indianapolis). Should have been worth an extension and a banner.
If Buzz is leaving or checking out other schools, get a BIG NAME, one who can recruit and coach. Basketball makes the money for all other sports at MU. Administration get off your boney a-- and get a coach. Send Buzz on his way. Why was MU not getting any BIGS with credentials. Something is wrong somewhere in the Ath. Dept. I think we have great facilities. Or is it Milwaukee.
I don't expect anymore significant signings this year or next at MU. Quit playing games.
FRUSTRATED with you to Cottingham. We need to re :( :( :( :( :( ?-( ?-( ?-( ?-(load. WE ARE MARQUETTE!!!!!!!!!
Great move to go to Annapolis. One of the more beautiful spots in America, solid paycheck, superb facilities, only pressure is "Beat Army."
He's going to be the #2 paycheck in the athletic dept, and can retire out of that job, in a very great place to live. I just don't see the downside for DeChellis. (unless he has a dream of winning the NCAAs, of course).

Agree with this. Why butt heads in Big 10/11/12 when PSU will always be an outlier interms of basketball. Nebraska will have the same fate in the future in basketball.

Amen. Courageous decision in many respects
What is courageous about taking a taking a job with increased stability and decreased expectations?
Look, I understand *why* he would do it. But painting it as "courageous" is a bit of stretch.
Let's not bring up Pepsi. Gives me a bad Crean visual.

+1. Words matter, Chicos.
Solid business decision. He knew he would be out at Penn State next year. His first choice was to stay there. He wasn't getting his first choice. He also lost a lot of players. Instead of unemployed in a year with lesser options, he took the Navy position for less money per year but for several more years. That's good business.
And the next time he's offered a raise to go to Bradley(?), he won't let his agent talk him out of it.

Yeah, it really does. Makes me wonder if he knew what was coming. My guess is yes.
Pakuni, this is the dumbest thing I have ever read on this website.... and I just got done reading National Champs' lecture on how to read tweets. National Champs did everything he could to dumb himself down to your level, but he just couldn't seem to do it. Nice work.

You do realize that was written in the Spring...and he was being sarcastic.
Otherwise, helluva post.

I highly doubt it, assuming you're talking about the football team's troubles. He did know that what was coming next was the firing of him and his staff after this year when their contracts ran out, so Penn State wouldn't be on the hook for any buyouts. He did have an exceptional year
by Penn State basketball standards last year, but he was losing most of that team, so this year its SNAFU.

Yes we do. NationalChamps, based on your previous postings and general comments, I do not fear you. The only thing I fear is a bar fight. Since we are Hangin' at the Al and not at The Superbar, I do not fear you. For the third and final time, I do not fear you. Good day, sir.
P.S. I'm witty.

I don't know...maybe I'm wrong but I get the impression that quite a few people knew but were staying quiet. And it sounds like the grand jury investigation was going on a bit before this. He's a Penn State guy, probably pretty tied in to the goings on, is it that unfathomable that he got wind of this and split before it blew up?
Maybe not, but I have to imagine a whole lot of people other than JoePa, McQueary, and a couple of administrators knew what Sandusky was up to, especially in a town so tied into the university culture.
