Title: Singapore
Post by: MDMU04 on April 18, 2011, 12:14:57 AM
I'm traveling overseas on business and later this week I'm traveling through Singapore.  I'll be on a layover of about 11 hours and I'm going to leave the airport and head into town for the night.  Has anyone out there been to Singapore who would have any recommendations about where to stay/eat?

It's an overnight layover...I get there at 7 PM and leave at 6 AM the next morning.

Anything any of you people could suggest would be great.

If you were asking about Hong Kong or Guandgong Province I could help.

I've read Singapore has tried to diversify so they supposedly have outdoor restaurants on the waterfront & casinos now.  FWIW.

I used to live in Singapore for a year. Changi International Airport has a hotel within the airport itself, if you prefer not to go outside the airport. There are several hotels like Holiday Inn, Hilton, Changi Village etc. Let me know if you have further questions. Would be absolutely willing to answer any questions.

Holiday Inn would be your best bet if you want to be in the city. Singapore is a small city that getting around is really easy with the Metro system. Also, it is absolutely safe city to be in.

Yikes...after nearly 24 hours on a plane or in an airport, that is a pretty tight schedule if coming from the US. However, for a first-timer and on the company's dime, you can stay at Raffles for the touristy thing.  It is an old, historic colonial era hotel...and home of the Singapore Sling...but more so in a good locale for night. They can get you to the airport on time for the early departure which usually isn't an issue there. You can take a short cab or walk to Marina Bay were there are plenty of good restaurants in a nice setting--mainly fish. Try some fish eyes or jelly fish.  FarEast can provide you better info.

It is a safe city, but caters to business so its a bit bland. Nice but not one of my favorites. There is a lot to see if you go back...it is a very multicultural city actually.

There are a ton of places to stay and eat.  It is like NYC only clean.  They have a new casino called Marina Bay Sands that is really cool.  The rooms are expensive, but it is cool.

Since you are going to be there such a short time I am not sure what else to tell you.  Plenty of options and not many of them bad.  I like Singapore alot, especially the weather seeing as though it is currently snowing in Milwaukee.

Yep! Dr. Blackheart is absolutely correct. Raffles will be a better option, although it could get pricey. Orchard Road is the place to shop. Clarke Quay is a place to go if you want to drink. Marina Bay is awesome too.

Thanks for all your help everyone.  I've been at a coal mine on Borneo in Indonesia for the last 3 weeks, so even a few hours overnight in Singapore is going to be quite a welcome change of scenery before the long flight home.

I did the transit hotel in the airport when I had an overnight layover on the way out here.  It was really nice to have a shower and a bed for a few hours after the ORD-HKG-SIN marathon.

I think I'm going to check out Clarke Quay for dinner and a few drinks afterwards.  I won't be chewing any gum or spitting on the sidewalk anywhere either...

I wish I had more time to stay there, the city looks really cool.  I want to get home for Easter weekend though, so that's the way it works out.

I lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for 3 years, which was an amazing place as well. Hope you enjoyed South East Asia.

Ouch!  Definitely sounds tougher than the experience I had where I was once stuck in Chinese tire factory for 4 days and it was early December.  I don't think there was heat in either the factory or hotel.
