As usual there was some trash thrown about on the comment section below the Journal-Sentinel story about Todd Mayo's signing with one person talking about the different high schools he's attended and making it sound like Todd was a basketball nomad. Below is a year old story explaining the transfers from South Point High School in Ohio, to Houston and then Germantown High Schools in Memphis before prepping this year at Notre Dame Prep.

I am assuming this article was not intended to help his p.r. I don't think this vindicates his dubious choices to switch high schools. Also Huggs takes a pass on him, and he apparently doesn't qualify academically even though he has all of the resources available to him. I'm not enthused but wish him well.
Apparently doesn't qualify academically? Is that why he went prep?

His "dubious" choice to switch high schools came about because he and his family moved from West Virginia to be with his brother in Memphis after he joined the Grizzlies. But why bother letting facts get in the way?
And Huggins didn't take a pass on him. WVU offered Mayo before he committed to Marquette. Though I'm sure you'll now find a way to make that look bad as well ("Sheesh, why are we recruiting the same kids as Huggins?")
The only question that needs to be asked is whether or not this Kid can play basketball. THATS IT!!! We are not recruiting someone for the Quiz Bowl we are recruiting for basketball!

I haven't read anywhere that he isn't qualified academically. But how about this scenario? After changing high schools a number of times because of his family's moves to be with his big brother, he went to prep school for a year to work on his study habits, improve his grades, mature, help his test scores, as well as his game. I also note that he is 25 lbs lighter than he was when this article was written. Finally, this is a puff piece, meant to enthuse WVU fans about a likely recruit. It was not written from an MU perspective.
Mayo is going to be the real deal...as is Juan Anderson....combine these two with Derrick Wilson and Jamil Wilson....MU should be in good shape 3 years from now when these guys are Juniors and Jamil Wilson is a senior...along with Gardner, Blue, and Jamial Jones.
OK.....what changes in your life would occur if you go from a family with relatively modest means to one that has millions of dollars. Would you move to a better neighborhood? Perhaps change high schools or go to a prep school? I think the answer is yes for Todd. His work at Notre Dame Prep speaks for itself. Clearly part of the reason he choose Marquette was because of the family atmosphere and demanding coach who will help his continuing development.
I've read his Twitter posts and don't see anything but a young man who is excited about being part of the Marquette family and is excited about getting to Milwaukee. Theres a love and rivalry with his brother that will serve him well. His brother had to deal with a lot of BS that would be tough for any of us particularlyu if you're a teenager. He's wiser for it and that will help his brother with the transition to big time college basketball.
Buzz has scored another spring recruiting steal -- Jimmy Butler, Jae Crowder, Jamil Wilson, Devante Gardner and now Todd Mayo. Do we all realize what an achievement this kind of spring recruiting success means?

Bingo...the day after MU knocked WVU out of the Big East tourney..Huggins offered...a day after the offer from WVU...Todd chose MU. This was a GREAT get for MU. Todd has GAME!

Yes...This is what we need to be discussing this offseason. ::)
Instead of being excited about a commitment from a high level recruit, this is what you'd rather be talking about?

It's posts like this that help me understand why some have decided not to post here any more.
Here we have signed a highly regarded player, one whom we should be going out of our way to make feel welcome and we get this drivel?
Why not wait until he actually enrolls, plays and does something worthy of criticism before criticizing? Stupit!
I generally agree with you. This group passes way too many judgements on players with too little information. We have no patience. I have done this in the past and am trying very hard to not do this in the future. It is really unfair.
I'm totally excited about this recruiting class. Todd and Juan look really good from what I've read about them. Haven't read enough about Derrick yet though. I love it that we stole one huggy! Go Buzz!
I'm not trying to start anything, I honestly just want to understand...
Is the "dubious" choice of switching high schools based on moving from West Virginia to Tennessee or that he switched from Houston HS to Germantown HS once living in Tennessee? Or both?
Germantown High, as mentioned in the article, is a "powerhouse" program while Houston, his first HS in Memphis, was just a decent team. Elite players switching HS's to play on better teams is nothing new and far from dubious in my opinion.

Under normal circumstances, I think that would be a perfectly valid question. But under these circumstances, I think it's hardly worth you spending your time asking, because it's likely Badger trolls asking the questions.
Here's how the Todd Mayo commitment will work:
- He is a bad guy and untrustworthy for changing schools multiple times and will likely leave Marquette...
- ...if that fails, he most likely took money from Marquette to secure his commitment, because his brother did that...
- ...if that fails, he isn't smart enough to play D1 ball because he went to prep school...
- ...if that fails, he is a dirty "gangsta" style player based on his FB and Twitter accounts...
- ...if that fails, he is a villain because he doesn't like the tangy zip of Miracle Whip...
- ...and if that fails, they'll come up with something else.
Bottom line, Todd has shown nothing to indicate that he isn't a good kid who will be dedicated to his game and his studies while at Marquette. There will be people who hate on him simply because he plays for Marquette, and there will be people who try to insinuate negative things about him simply because they don't like us. But my guess is that considering who Todd's brother is, he's already heard and dealt with worse through his high school career than anything these trolls have yet come up with, and I'm confident that the strength he gained from that will serve him well while he spends the next few years proving himself to be a Warrior.

So making sure you're constantly reevaluating to make sure you're in the right situation to accomplish your goals is considered dubious? You're the type of guy that sticks in a crap job for 30 years because you're loyal to a company that's not loyal to you, aren't you?

Cats like you really make this place a downer sometimes. This kind of cynical, whiny commentary is insufferable. It must be really difficult to taste the joy in life when you're drinking so much haterade.
I think the only dubious choice here would be the WVU tats!
Welcome Todd.

Knight wants our Milwaukee recruits to all be from Fox Point, Chicago kids from Winnetka, Detoit kids from Grosse Point, etc., with 30+ ACTs and mothers and fathers who are both doctors. Anything short of that is deemed unseemly and unworthy.

A nice book about High School basketball by Scott Brooks called Black Men Can't Shoot offers an explanation for the high transfer rate amongst high school b-ball players. Basically they do it for better competition and to improve their name recognition with the intent of improving their odds of receiving a college scholarship. Many of you may recall that Scott Christopherson ( a former Crean recruit), now at Iowa State did this.

cool. will he be able to get weed from OJ
Travis Diener's parents held him back/homeschooled him for a year in an attempt to give him an advantage in HS basketball. IMO, that's more dubious than switching high schools to play against better competition, get more recognition and potentially earn a free ride to a university like Marquette.

He was playing Juco ball a month ago so it must be a very minimum security facility.

If on the off chance Todd or ones of his friends read this. There are about 10 true Idiots on this board and they do not represent the 300 other people that read it and post on it. 98% are very happy you have chosen to come to MU and look forward to you being a great addition to the MU team and the MU community.
10 is generous

Highland CC in Freeport, Illinois is a bit spartan, but calling it jail is libelous!
