I met Coach Lavin a few summers back when he was part of a USO tour in Iraq (he was still with ESPN at the time). He was very genuine, approachable and nice. You could tell he was appreciative and happy to be there, just seemed like a real good guy.
Typically, USO events last about 2-3 hours, the performers are in and out within the same day for safety reasons. Lavin and the others stayed for 5 days to coach an intramural tournament. That made a real great impression on everyone there, even people who had no idea who they were.
Here's hoping he gets better soon and gets back on the sidelines in those white sneakers...
