I wonder what Jerel was saying to him at the end of the video. Scottie must be frustrated about going from All American to barely making it in the NBDL.

Jerel "the cooler" Mcneal

Scottie seems mad at the world... love Jerel telling him to chill out.

Scottie had the epitome of crazy eyes going there.  Did he really just pick a fight with a 6'10 dude?  Wow

Isn't that a cameo from former MU recruit Chas McFarland in the white shirt escorting Scottie back to the bench?

Scottie is probably just pissed that after his 10-year stint in college the best he can do is the NBDL

Title: OT: Question regarding D-League
Post by: MarquetteDano on April 08, 2011, 11:07:19 AM
My apologies as this is slightly off topic to the original post but I am no NBA expert and had a question regarding the D-League....

I see salaries are like $30,000 per year or even lower for the D-League.  Is the only reason these players play in the D-League because they have a better chance to make the NBA than if the played elsewhere?

It just seems like one would be wiser to go to Europe or wherever and make much, much more money.  I see there are good but not great players in Europe making 1-3 million Euros per year.

I can see a player playing for one year because they think they have a solid chance to make the NBA.  But after that the chances must be very slim.  Why don't they just play in Europe or elsewhere?

Well, a couple thoughts (which were partially covered when Jerel got a 10-day contract)..

1) I'm not sure Euro contracts are consistently as high as you think (though I'm just guessing, perhaps you are more knowledgeable than me on them...)

2) Even if you're "only" making $30k in the NBDL, the elusive 10-day contract can quickly double your earnings:
QuoteThe minimum salary a 10-day contract can offer is the # of days in the contract divided by the # of days in the regular season multiplied by the minimum annual salary. Note that 10-day does not mean 10 games.

Example:
Minimum salary is $473,604 (2010-2011)
# of days in NBA regular season is 170

Salary = 10/170 x $473,604 = $27,859

Exactly.  The 10-day contract is a big part of that, and of course staying at the pro level longer if you perform well.

Part of it could be that guys don't want to be 3,000 miles from home too, but that's just my WAG

Paul Shirley's "Can I Keep My Jersey" is kind of an interesting read that provides insight into what motivates the decisions of at least one lower level professional basketball player on where to play.  All of the things said already definitely play into it.  Also, in his case, he had a larger contract with a Greek team, but a significant portion went unpaid-so there's that to worry about.
