I am really excited to see this kid in a Marquette uniform next season. He can really do it all on the court. All we have to hope for is that he can play a little defense and I think he will see the court as much as any freshman did this season. Basically what I am hoping for is the same type of minutes Vander got this year but with more offensive production. With Juan looking like he can handle the ball maybe a point forward is possible for some minutes. Could throw out a lineup next year at times during the game of
Anderson
DJO
Jamil
Crowder
O'Tule
That is some extreme length and athleticism on the court there. Cant wait until next year
Pretty old video. I believe he was a Junior here, right?
Wow! Pretty impressive (Junior/Senior or whatever). Great court vision too. But gotta see it at the next level. You never know how the learning curve goes (i.e., Blue, Jones, E. Will). You are right about that ball handling though. But you also have to figure all 3 I listed will also play into that starting lineup. Especially since E. Will started the last 6 or 7 games.
i really like Anderson's passing ability. He truly is multi-skilled. BTW, who is O'Tule? Is he new Irish recruit? ;)

Your right, saw it March 25 and forgot it is now 2011. Oops. Did just see on Twitter though that his senior mixtape will be coming out soon it sounds like.
Congratulations Juan for a tremendous senior year! Can't wait to watch you play for Marquette. You will lead Marquette to many wins and you will love playing for them. Great school and great people!

sweet video. I love him wearing the Marquette garb.
As a Bay Area native, I am pleased to see him coming to MU.

Here are highlights from Castro Valley vs. Oakland in the NorCal semifinals this year. They beat Oakland but lost to De La Salle in the NorCal finals. De La Salle is playing Mater Dei in the CA state championship.
My best friend lives in San Jose, is a lifelong MU fan, and has a freshman son playing varsity HS BB. He has seen Juan in person, play 4 times this year.
He said "think Jimmy Butler, with even more athleticism". Juan's HS team is blessed with D1 palyers, and has played with maturity, and evidencing of good coaching, and heads up play. My buddy thinks he sees enough in Juan to justify some PT already next year, at MU--do you agree?
As for playing time next year, the one question is, can he defend? There are lots of bodies ahead of him at thw "switchable" 2-4 position.
I like their uniforms. :) I think he will fit in nicely.

First thing I thought of as well. Kind of nice that a HS in California wears MU style uni's.
Nice new vid
will he be on campus for summer school? It'd be nice to get him in the weight room a little early just to start getting a little more bulk on him to handle the physicality of the Big East season.

Most Frosh are, unless they are not cleared by the Clearing House.. JC players who have to finish up school work to transfer, tend to be later. I would expect Anderson to be here the first of July.
The dunks, layups, blocks, passes, etc. all look like he's got a lot of athleticism, but what really stood out to me, was his shot looks really smooth, not "Ray Allen smooth" but pretty solid fundamentals and releases it high. Only minor issue, he doesn't seem to get a lot of lift into his shot, but he's tall enough that probably won't matter.

The pass he throws at 0:28 is ridiculous.
Awesome? Any confirmation that he has grown a few inches from 6-foot-6?
You wonder how Buzz would want to leave with Juan coming to MU. They really
have 2 nice players picking it up for Jimmy. Jamil Jones better get his act together
as this kid really understands the game, forget the dunks, all these kids can do that
but his shot looks smooth and his passing is outstanding, O'tule better learn how to
catch better next year as he maybe the recipient on many of those passes.
JA is legit. In my mind this is as big of signing for Buzz as Blue. I have not idea how he got him out of Cali. This kid is not some "diamond in the rough", unknown like Gardner. JA is very highly regarded out west, and could probably have played anywhere in the Pack 10. I'm very excited to seem him lace 'em up for MU next season. Also, I heard he may be 1-2 inches taller now then what was reported earlier in the year.
Got to say I'm more excited about Juan coming in than I was about Vander. Vander's senior season seemed to be a step back from his Junior one. Juan seems to have continued to dominate at his high school level and his confidence seems sky high coming in. I could see him and Vander having a season long battle for minutes behind DJO and Jamil.
Reminds me of Jeremy Lamb. Looks really exciting!!
Anybody know what his season stats were, and did he play in the largest school division in california. Don't hear much about California BB in Midwest.

Great question. I would ask the same regarding D Wilson and Mayo.
He plays in the Hayward league - very competitive. They made it to the northern Cali finals, but were upset by De La Salle (beat them 60-42 prior to the upset). His team is ranked 5th in the State. They are well balanced, so he only averaged 17 ppg. They are listing him at 6'7"
I can't wait to see all the threads on other boards titled "We need a guy like Juan Anderson!"
Many feel Juan can be a VERY special player at MU. His attitude, passion and enthusiasm toward Marquette are off the charts good. With those traits in place, clear talent, and Buzz pushing him to his limit....Juan stands a GREAT chance at being an all-time great at MU.
The competition he plays against in Oakland, is very good. It would come as no surprise to me if Juan sees 15-20 minutes next year.
Pretty exciting to think he and Todd Mayo are in the same class, with a very solid point in Derrick Wilson. Pretty much have you 1,2 and 3 set up.
Feels like a natural to replace Butler as a 2-3 with great positive attitude.
Next year cannot start fast enough.

Buzz will have a lot of different looks he can throw at a team with the roster we've got for next year. We will be very versatile, athletic, long, and can go to a power game with Devante on the block..
He looks much more athletic to me. I think are guys are athletic this season but not athletic enough to match up with top schools. This kids looks awfully good on the tape posted here. I realize it is highlight film but still pretty smooth.

I hope he does turn out special, but let's see him in action before the hosannas start flying.
I remember a post earlier this season that predicted Vander would be the best guard in MU history. Way too early for those kind of accolades, IMO
I'm trying hard to temper my expectations. He'll be a freshman, he doesn't have the recruiting ratings of some other prospects, we're deep enough that he doesn't need to play. Maybe YayAreasFinest just does a great job of mix tapes, but I try to watch a lot of mix tapes, especially guys we are in on, and he is the most impressive kid I've ever watched in these. His court vision and handle for a guy his size is insane. He looks like a legitimate point forward, reminiscent of Evan Turner, only with fancier passing. When he dunks, he is legitimately getting above the rim. The consideration that his biggest noted weakness was his 3-point shooting and it as become a strength his senior year is a testament to a great work ethic. Man, it's hard not to get excited about this kid.
If we didn't have so much talent and I saw this kid coming in, I'd expect him to be a starter and potential double-digit scorer as a freshman. He shows flashes of Evan Turner, Blake Griffin, and with rumors of him possibly sprouting to 6'9", it's scary to imagine what he might become. I'm still tempering my expectations, and only thinking he will give us about 2-5 minutes per game and not really contribute until his sophomore or junior year, but this just might be the best player Buzz has recruited so far. He looks scary good.
Of course, it's still just a mix tape.
I'm with BrewCity on this one.
On one hand, we've seen what unrealistic expectations can do to set up an 18-yr-old for disappointment.
On the other hand, holy crap! His feel for the game seems extraordinary. He makes tough plays look easy with touch for passing and shooting combined with body control and smooth hops.
I think there are going to be some absolute battles at the AL every day. If everyone buys in and stays healthy Buzz will have the chance to really make guys earn their minutes.
In the other threads, several posters we outlining things they'd like to see from Buzz. One on my wish list would be finding a bit more PT for more of these guys.

As a Bay Area alum, I've seen him play once. Butler doesn't fit, more like Fulce because he rangy, can hit the shots and take it to the hole. He plays within the team and doesn't take over the game as a ballhog. THAT element is going to help him at MU.

Since you seen him play, where will he fit next year, is he a small forward or big guard, can he rebound
or does he play totally outside? Does he play better with the ball in his hand? More importantly, does
he play D?
Whatever he "is", I absolutely love the spin move and the no-look passes...this kid's court vision is tremendous...
Unless he simply blows up into something spectacular, playing 8-10 minutes a a BE game as a freshman would be an exceptional contribution for Mr. Anderson. Bottom line: if he can play D, he will see the floor. If not, he won't see it until he does.
I think many of us MU fans have had their concept of how many minutes a frosh (not included one and done types) should play skewed by the three amigos and hayward. They got starter minutes immediately because there were so few options around them. MU no longer has that problem and minute distribution will adjust accordingly.
Agreed, if he gets 10 minutes a game, that would be about right, if more, you
really then have a good freshman.
his spin moves are insane

Sort of like Bo Ellis designing MU uniforms back in the day.
Bring back the "bumblebees", although I do not think Bo designed those!

Bo did not design the bumblebee, although his design is also illegal per the NCAA. His was the first untucked jersey's, buttercup yellow at home and light blue on the road. Bo liked those as his jersey was always untucked and he was messin' with his junk on every free throw. I don't think anyone wanted to rebound after that.

really dont mean to nit-pick because the kid looks outstanding, but i will anyways
Is this really his competition???
My guess is that's not his competition. AAU competitions often have quite a few different age levels and ranks all competing at the same event. Maybe that kid is some super-athlete, but my guess is that Anderson is probably in the 17 bracket and that kid is in the 11-13 bracket. And most of his mix tapes are from his high school games, which would be against mostly guys in his age and development level.

Skill set to play the guard, but really is a small forward.
Don't see him really filling out til his 3rd year. He's going to be a great 4 year starter.
Barring injuries of course (knock on wood).
He has a good handle but still needs work. You can tell from the videos how he sets up his crossover, and it's not D-1 fast yet. But it's good enough to have him handle the rock coming up the court. In the game I saw, he played best around the rim, without the ball in his hand.
He was unselfish and moved the ball within the offensive sets; a testament to the potent offensive weapons the Castro Valley team had this year.
He did get banged around inside because of his build, but his length at the prep level helped his defense.
Juan needs to get stronger to take the bruising that his teammates like Jae are going to give him in practices.
So you are already giving him JB's position right now, not sure about that
since Jamil will be at least 21 years old and in college for 3 years. I think
he will be a nice back-up next year. In the video's it looked like he was
a half step slow, much like Bernard Toone was as a freshman. Al had to
play zone to hide his defensive lapses.
