Title: Though They Lost...
Post by: 4everwarriors on March 17, 2007, 07:23:52 PM
today, I'm very impressed with Tony Bennett. Here's a sharp, young coach on the rise who has an offensive scheme that is a proven winner. If he can recruit to Pullman, he can recruit anywhere.
Too bad MU didn't have the foresight to hire his father when Dick was dying for the job many years ago.

Yet his team lost thanks in large part to some really stupid player decisions down the stretch (i.e. the guard going 1-on-2 at the end of the first OT, throwing up the unnecessary 3 at the end of the second OT). Methinks if MU lost in similar fashion to a lower-seeded team, you'd be among the first in line to rip Tom Crean, particularly for that last play. Instead, you're here praising the Bennett clan.
Interesting.

Oh, by the way that Bennett system is 62-57 in its first four seasons at Wazoo with one winning season and one tourney win. Tom Crean was 83-41 in his first four at Marquette, with a Final Four appearance.
Apparently the standards of excellence vary by location.

The announcers were ripping on him for letting off the throttle with their defense.  I agree with the announcers...they had that game and should have won it.

4ever...if a Tom Crean club was seeded 3rd and lost in the second round to a 6 seed would you have a similar type of post here.

Be honest.

you're correct. I'd be one of the first to rip Tom a new one. The difference here being I see Bennett as a young coach on the come. Don't forget WSU sucked sewer water just a few years ago. Crean on the other hand is either stubborn, a slow learner, or incapable after 8 years at MU.

Well at least you admit to being a hypocrite on the issue...which is nice.

;D

Honesty is hard to come by and I give you credit for admitting as such.

Personally, I like Bennett Sr. and Bennett Jr., I just hate the style of basketball they played at UW-Madison and at Wazzu.  It can be effective but it will always be difficult to recruit strong athletes to that type of style.

I have to chuckle at your 8 year remark yet you're willing to give the keys to the cadillac to a guy that has 1 year under his belt.

the keys to the Mercedes or Lexus too. The guy is a winner with a number of athletes on his roster. I like the steak more than I like the sizzle.

"Don't forget WSU sucked sewer water just a few years ago."

Do you recall the roster Crean's first year.  If I remember right, our starting center was a walk-on from Cedarburg.

a Hall of Fame roster compared to Dick Bennett. I think WSU won 5 or 6 games the season before he took over.

Wazzu also started 3 juniors, a senior and a Red Shirt Sophomore this season.

They should be quite good again next year.

Just as we should be quite good again next year with 1 senior, 3 juniors and likely a sophomore starting.
