Poll
Question:
If we were able to change MU's sports nickname today, which do you prefer?
Option 1: No change: Golden Eagles suits us fine.
votes: 16
Option 2: Warriors.
votes: 147
Option 3: Gold.
votes: 5
Option 4: Hilltoppers.
votes: 6
Option 5: Golden Avalanche.
votes: 2
Option 6: Something else.
votes: 2
I confess that the reason I'm posing the question is that, among this list, I'd choose anything -- yes, including Gold, and, yes, including "Something else" -- over Golden Eagles, which, especially when the university is in the uncommon position of basking in national and even international (thanks, Toronto Star) press, strikes me as milquetoast, generic, unimaginative, unmemorable, nonunique, overly focus group-y, and completely divorced from 90%-plus of the university's history. I didn't hate Gold, even though it seemed to have been plucked out of the, well, blue. It was a blank slate, at least, and could have developed organically, like most of the great sporting nicknames (yes, Fighting Irish is a prime example, but so is Golden Avalanche). A strike against Gold is that it seemed reachy to associate ourselves with the Crimson, Cardinal and Maroons of Harvard, Stanford and Chicago, if that was its intent. I expect Warriors to be the majority choice, presuming anyone responds to this poll at all. I had been proud that the university was proactive in making sure the nickname honored rather than lampooned, but I admit it was a long and defensive conversation to have had to have over and over again in those final years. And a mere distaste for political correctness is not really sufficient reason to revert. Hilltoppers has a cool ring, I think, and speaks to the school's physical location, Jesuit traditions, and roughly as much of its history as does Warriors. As for the "Something elses," it would be fun to hear some. The only thing that springs to mind is the 1990s also-ran Lightning, and thinking back to that prospect is the only thing that gives me even a slightly positive feeling toward Golden Eagles.
Might I suggest that this be a nice topic for discussion in June....2049....
I am sorry... this is stupid- no need to bring this whole thing up again.
Wait. We changed our names to the Golden Eagles? What the flock...of eagles?
In seriousness, I absolutely hate the "Golden Eagle" moniker. I would have preferred "Gold" over "Golden Eagles." I would have preferred "Flock" over "Golden Eagles." I would have preferred "Dirty Diapers" over "Golden Eagles." And so on and so forth.
It's always a great time to bring up this embarrassment. To this DAY the media STILL calls us the Warriors! Why? Because the change made sense to absolutely NOBODY! Every time somebody says "Golden Eagles" nationally, you can almost hear the snickering. It's a complete joke.
I would have rather have just been Marquette, with no nickname, than GE, The Gold or anything other than Warriors.
PRN, and the MU administration tacitly let's this happen. There are reasons that they can't officially go back to Warriors...but they don't disuade it from happening unofficially.
Frackin Gold. It's only purpose is to give BADger posters something to chuckle about. The ninny that came up with it should be strung up (however many years it has been)

could we even do that?
does mascot related revenue amount to a sum large enough to kill this question?
Voted gold. Only because this thread is stupid.
After the Gold debacle, MU polled Alumni and Students for a more suitable nickname - telling us all that all votes for Warriors would not be counted. MU tallied the Warrior votes, but didn't count them towards the determination of the "new" nickname.
I was very surprised that Golden Eagles won, I figured Hilltoppers or Golden Avalanche would have gotten more votes. But when 100% of your alumni are voting Warriors, it makes the the 100's of votes for Golden Eagles seem huge.
Only a university could be as ignorant so as to not listen to its customer. It is the height of irony that people go to college to become more educated - yet the simplest common sense nugget of wisdom in business...Marquette cannot adopt:
LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMER!!!!
It is an absolute embarrassment that the administration cannot make this simple change that would please roughly 100,000 alumni....
i voted for Jumping Jesuits... I thought that had a chance, but unfortunately not

Ners, there are reasons they can't change back. Real, legitimate ones that have been discussed here before. Read the comments from bma in this thread and you can see the issues MU is dealing with:

you'd have trouble attracting "top notch" liberal faculty.
I prefer The Gold to, well absolutely nothing.
When they asked for suggestions, given that Warriors was prohibited, I suggested "Screamin Heifers". Seemed like a 'golden' marketing opportunity to me, but alas, apparently it was rejected.
Since I knew they'd never relent to warriors again even w/o an Indian connotation...I mean warriors has been used to connote many things that have zero to do with American Indians.....
I sent a letter to Father Wild suggesting "War Eagles"....kind of the best of both worlds and also attached this....
http://ironbrigader.com/2010/09/15/abe-war-eagle-mascot-8th-wisconsin-infantry/
... which showed a clear tie of the name to Wisconsin history...tried to enlist help of a couple local journalists as well....all to no avail....was told that anything hinting at war or warrior would never fly. It's a shame because War Eagles has a lot more in common with the state than a golden eagle...whatever that is.
Fr. Wild has returned emails in the past about other things but I never heard back on this one...go figure...
the Marquette Buzz
bring back the bumblebee uni's.
We call them Warriors. We chant Warriors. We remember Warriors. Politics are what they are, and while I'm not a huge fan of Golden Eagles due largely to it feeling a bit generic, it's been a part of Marquette now for 17 years.
And as much as I'd love to go back to Warriors, let's remember we are a Catholic university. What will we change the mascot to, a marauding Crusader? A rag-tag bunch of New York gang members from the 70's? No matter what we did, it wouldn't sit well with someone. We're never going back, we all know it. Better just to leave this to die.

Not sure how I missed that thread. Interesting, although I think I'd say that there may be "real, legitimate reasons that have been
hinted at here before." I'm not sure I'd say that they were "discussed." Still, and interesting thread.

I'm not smart enough to figure out who was donating enough money. Can someone spell it out for this dummy?

I agree completely. Why do we need a nickname. "We are Marquette." Says it all.

I think the inference is that MU agreed to not change back to Warriors as part of some sort of gift agreement, possibly with a Native tribe, and in return received a sizable donation to help with Valley Fields and/or the Campus Circle project.
The only hole that I see in this point, is that Wayne Sanders *should* have known about this agreement when he made his Commencement speach...otherwise why put the University through this?
Talk about flogging a dead horse. I thought MU was very proactive when they dropped Willie Wampum & relaced him with the "First Warrior". Well, that didn't work out & now it's decades later. Time to MOVE ON

How much money could Marquette have received? Anyone know what those donations looked like?
I have to believe the cost/benefit analysis of changing the name back to Warriors would outweigh any previously received money.
Also, there is a new President coming in that is now two generations removed from DiUlio. Frankly, I think a new president is good timing to re-introduce the Warrior debate. I already have a half-written, "Welcome to Marquette, Fr. Pilarz. Please change the nickname back to Warriors" post ready for Cracked Sidewalks.

If it a legal agreement, the possibility of geting sued is real and should be avoided. And the incoming President is beholden to any agreement, even it was made 100 years ago.

I have no real knowledge of that, I just concluded that based on the hints in that old thread.

+ 10 Trillion
OK, how 'bout this:
Officially drop the "Golden Eagles" nickname. Go forward purely as "Marquette" with no nickname. There is not an eagle to be found on any basketball gear or uniform. Continue to use the "MU" logo. Then we, as fans and alumni (and the media), can continue calling the teams the Warriors with implicit approval from the university administration. Officially, there is no nickname and no endorsement of anything offensive to anyone.
Hilltoppers.
The name was changed at the drop of a hat to "Warriors" for no real good reason, so it's it bit hypocritical for people to claim that as the "rightful" name.
I know that's going to get a bunch of you older gentlemen cranky, but it needs to be said.
The PC vs non-PC stuff is just smoke if we are actually talking about what the name "should" be.

Is it bigger than a breadbasket? What's the exposure here?
I would think the tribe would make it a "you want this donation and future donations please change your name" type deal if they were indeed offended as BMA alludes.
Sweet 16 game tomorrow and we're talking about this again? :(
If we lose it will the curse of the golden eagle.....

Not just "change your nickname," but "name it after one of our clans."
Just be thankful we're not the Marquette Gnews.
our mascot could be an indian with multiple beaver skins strapped over his back.
Stone Cold-
Between the Scoop and I, I would personally love to see the mascot you laid out but we do need to be sensitive to all the members in the community. At the end of the day, despite how neat that mascot would be for us die hard fans, we cannot run the risk of alienating possible undergrads or offending the greater community.

Probably a waste of time... but if I had time to kill in d/t Milwaukee, I'd go to the courthouse & run an abstract on the title to the Valley Fields to see if there's is anything unusual attached to the property. I wouldn't expect to find a smoking gun, but would halfway expect there to be at least be a notation referring to a document that might have some details.
I'm just thinking creatively... I have no clue what the deal was re: the nickname change. All I know is that there's a few pieces that point to involvement by the fire keepers to the south.

I always hated the name Golden Eagles until I saw a Golden Eagle thing on Planet Earth. They are bad ass. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VklTs-Tid_I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VklTs-Tid_I)
With that said, I voted Warriors.

Jesus the day before a Sweet 16 game and this thread is posted. Really?
Jim officiated at my wedding. Surprised us all going Jesuit. Now he's at UCLA in film school, making movies for god. (???)
Did he work at the BMU or AMU? I am trying to pin down how I know him.
I also can't believe this got resurrected the night before our big game. However, if it pushed the "Buzz to OU" posts away from the top of MUScoop, then maybe it has some redeeming value.
That being said, though I'm a Warrior, I went with Hilltoppers. Warriors isn't coming back, and it's better than Golden Eagles because I'm against shared nicknames and several schools already had GE before MU adopted it. Hilltoppers has some history with us.
GO MARQUETTE!!!
My recollection is that he did work for BMU.
