Title: Al-Dean Buzz-Roy

Anybody see any parallels? Somewhat eccentrics vs. seasoned iconics?

Maybe not. Just askin'.

Is Roy a chain smoker too?  My, would the badger fans have had a field day in the Tokoto recruitment criticizing Dean for his smoking habits ...   ;)

all of the talk about buzz and his jucos and kids who took the road less travelled vs. the "burger game" all american kids at unc reminds me of the recruitment of Jimmy Boylan.  He wanted to transfer from a small (DII?) school and his coach called dean smith.  Dean said they don't take transfers at unc but he would call Al.  Long story short Boylan goes to MU and beats Dean smith's transfer free UNC team in 77.

Does UNC still not take any transfers?

Not taking juco transfers was a policy put in place by Dean Smith. I am reading a book called "The Carolina Way." It discusses Coach Smiths approach to the game, practices and also has business tie ins.

Smith goes into talking about he didn't want to take transfers because a player who worked hard for 2 years shouldn't have to look over his shoulder at the end of the off season. Smith also said that was his philosophy and that "not doing so (recruiting Juco's) could have been a mistake on our part, but I was comfortable with it."

I never knew that about Boylan. Very interesting tie-in to a book I'm reading. Thank you MU Scoop.

BTW: Really good book. I recommend it.

Don't know what their "official" position on jucos/transfers is today. As noted, Dean Smith passed on Jimmy Boylan and sent him Al's way. A few years earlier, though, he did take future hall of famer Bob McAdoo fron Vincennes JC. So at least back in the day they could make an exception for a 5* one and done type of player.
