Now i know this is going to be a real tough game to win with their length but obviously the key is to limit their fast breaks and drive hard on them. They are not deep and we need to get Zeller and Henson in foul trouble
During the Washington game there was a lot of talk about how UNC was once again getting all the calls. Ill buy into that if somehow we foul them more often then they do us.
Barnes really scares me as hes heated up and is knocking down outside shots. They are not that strong from the outside but still teams seem to kill us there
Lastly, how do you think we guard? Jimmy has done a great job stopping Guards like Holloway and Jardine, so it could be a key for him to stop Marshall who has been on fire with his assist totals. Problem is they have Zeller, Henson and Barnes so idk who would guard those 3 then.
DJO raining 3's, and he, JFB, and Predator each scoring 20 with Cadougan dishing 10 assists should be the key.

Yes, but that has happend a grand total of zero times this year.
1st time for everything?
How 'bout we just kick 'em in their privates before the jump ball?
Watched most of that Washington/UNC game, and they provided a great template for how to play against UNC. Slow the tempo, and make UNC play half court (which they're still pretty good at), and try to get into the paint, attack the big guys, Henson and Zeller. They didn't win, but they made it a "couple of possessions here-or-there" type game.

That too.
I think the obvious key is to score more than they do by the final whistle. If we do that, I guarantee a Marquette victory.
Jimmy will probably match up with Barnes, but Barnes will probably be able to draw fouls on him. Thus, I bet Buzz will switch out players to limit the fouls on Butler. That said, Roy will probably rotate the ball so that Barnes can eventually draw the Butler match up.
That is...
unless MU plays some zone.

To paraphrase renowned film critic Homer Simpson, "But, the kick in the privates strategy has...kicking in the privates!"
Intentional foul.
2 shots and 2 balls.
Double their best postup just like jackson. Put Jimmy on the best remaining player. Beat them down the court when MU has the ball.
think jimmy has to take barnes. marshall much more of a passer then scorer. MU must control temo like they have in first two games...do not get into a race with UNC.

It is in MUs gameplan to run whenever they can. They should not change that. MU has more team speed than does UNC.
MU's game plan is to run when they can off turnovers, its not the entire game plan. We will slow up if theres nothing there. We look for fast breaks off turnovers where theres a guy either floating or a pass intercepted.
UNC likes to get it and go every time
MU runs more than just off of turnovers. They had a few baskets by getting the ball down the floor quick even after made baskets by Syracuse yestarday.

Yes that happend off of made baskets, like Jimmys for example but that was because we had jimmy streaking like I said only this rare time was not off a turnover.
UNC likes to grab a casual rebound and just take off. If we limit them from doing that and do our fast breaks when they come to us its very possible. Just dont want it a track meet.

Run on offense, when appropriate is fine. However, we do not want this game to be helter skelter. And we should not be crashing the offensive boards too much or jacking up a lot of threes. That leads to transition and, I'm telling you, they will run us out of the gym.
If we lose to UNC by them beating our half court defense, so be it. If we give up 20+ points in transition we are going to lose. And we need to do things on offense that does not lead to easy transition baskets.
The hell with us needing to slow tempo...let's make UNC adapt to our speed. We have a lot more quickness at the guard position than does Carolina. Carolina doesn't exactly handle intense ball pressure very well. I'm confident Jimmy can check Barnes effectively - to where he doesn't go off for 30..probably holds him to about 15.
I like Otule matching up defensively against Zeller - Zeller not much better if any better than Rick Jackson. Gonna be up to Jae to neutralize Henson - who is long/athletic. I like Gardner coming in the game to body Zeller for a little bit..
This is about US...and US only....play our game like we have against X and Cuse...no reason we cannot beat UNC. So long as we get past the jersey name..we should be fine..

Our speed? UNC is one of the most up-tempo teams in the country. Their adjusted tempo rating is the highest of any of the teams remaining in the tournament.
I agree they don't handle ball pressure well, so I would employ the 3/4 zone press to slow them down, then make them make plays in the half-court.
If we try to run with them, we are dead. We got to try to keep them under 70 and limit their posessions. They don't shoot from 3 very well, so I would pack it in, and limit their offensive rebounds.
Only Barnes is a decent 3 point shooter and he's streaky at best. They beat people at the rim and in transition. We force them into half court game when they have the ball. Their half court offense starts with the ball in Marshall's hands. Do a lot of hedging on him and slow him and their defense down. If he's allowed to get good looks to get the ball inside we're in serious trouble. Cut off the head and the body will die.
Look at their close games. Almost all were on the road and low scoring. Their last 6 games have been at home. Now it's a neutral court and we can expect the crowd on our side. Slow their tempo and they may get impatient.
I'm just glad that we as marquette fans can say crap like pack it in, and no can really shoot threes, and make them match our tempo or slow it down, but our head coach has nitty gritty numbers tatooed on his brain.
If this team can beat UNC, and i think they have 45/55 shot, Buzz is the man to make the gameplan work.

Simply because you don't understand anything about game plans doesn't mean other MU fans don't.
Maximum minutes we can get out of O'Toule. Stay out of foul trouble and shooting better than 'cuse game is very important.
Keys to winning:
1) MU has to score 75 pts.
2) MU has to make more FT than UNC takes
3) MU must have single digit turnovers.
4) JFB, CO and Jay C have to stay out of foul trouble.
5) MU must force double digit turnovers from UNC.
6) MU has to shoot 40% from 3pt.
I know it is asking a lot, but they can do this.

Buzz said on the SVP show yesterday that UNC averages 78 posessions a game while MU averages 76. SVP was surprised. What we have to do is make them take the ball out of the basket. Shoot well, get some offensive rebounds, keep them from turning loose their fast break and make them beat us running their half court sets. Avoid the dumb shot and the dumb turnover.
