Title: Dear Roy Williams
Post by: shaquilvaine on March 21, 2011, 08:09:48 AM
8 years ago I wokeup at 4am and drove 16 hours to New Orleans to watch the final four.  My efforts were rewarded with a colossal beatdown that still stings.  8 years later I have a new coach who can actually gameplan and who's players can keep up this time with the Carolina fast break.  Roy, I look forward to our rematch.  It is time to let 8 years of frustration out on your redneck ass.  Payback's a b&tch!

for some reason, this reminded me of the herb brooks speech. so i decided to alter it a bit...

Great moments are born from great opportunity.
And that's what you have here tonight, boys.

That's what you've earned here, tonight.

One game.

If we played 'em ten times, they might win nine.

But not this game. Not tonight.

Tonight, we ball with 'em.

Tonight, we stay with 'em, and we shut them down because we can!
Tonight, we are the greatest basketball team in the world.

You were born to be basketball players -- every one of ya.

And you were meant to be here tonight.

This is your time.

Their time -- is done. It's over.

I'm sick and tired of hearin' about what a great basketball team the Tar Heels have.
Screw 'em!

This is your time!!

Now go out there and take it!

Over on their boards it sounds like they are playing up the 1977 revenge factor.

Definitely a pretty effective strategy when the kids playing were still 12-15 years from conception.  ::)

I can't wait for this one.  The final four game was such a miserable experience.  Time to return the favor.

If I remember correctly, Roy kept his KU starters in when they were up by over 30 with 5 minutes to go.

Be careful what you wish for.....

My heart is certainly hoping for an MU win but my head says otherwise...I think we are athletic enough to cause them some problems like Clemson and FSU did, but the length and athleticism of their "big three" are unlike any team we've faced this year....Buzz is a great coach and will have a great game plan for them but even a very physical (and much taller than MU) Washington squad went down to them.

I think we need to be more humble...be happy to be in the sweet 16 and even more exited about what next year holds for us with the core of this team returning, but let's not start talking trash about a very good UNC team....if we win we can talk all the trash we want but they are a well coached and very classy group of guys who will be a formidable opponent.

I never begrudge an opposing coach for that.  I take it as a sign of respect that they think we could still come back and make it a game.

Now, clearing your bench with 5 minutes left?  That one stings.

I see your point, and agree, but, at the same time, it felt not-very-classy at the time.

Signed.

Would love to see Buzz's squad punch UNC in the face...but more particularily Roy Williams.  Let's get that chip on our shoulder and beat these "burger game" recruits..and their phony head coach.  Roy's "southern charm" is a complete sham...

I am a big fan of MU, but sorry you guys are idots.  Roy is no phony with nothing given to him.  He was raised in a single parent family in a very blue collar community of Hickory, NC.  Grow up please.

Sorry...but I just don't like the guy...and he comes off real phony to me...a little too awe shucksey....like last night where he made the statement of - "I just asked our players to help out the old man and win one for me."  (something to that effect)...

Having said this...I do know Roy is largely respected in college basketball circles..and I'm sure deservedly so.  But there is nothing wrong for wanting to get revenge on a guy who's team gave you a beat down of beat downs on a national stage in 2003

Could not have said it better.....Roy is the real deal, just like Buzz...so if you don't like Roy....look in the mirror....he may not be your coach but he is a gentleman and a genuinely good guy....

You can dislike his team but not the man.....now, if you want phony, look 8 miles down the road to Durham...K is the most foul mouthed coach in college basketball...you don't want to sit any where near the Duke bench (or near his wife or daughter for that matter) if you have kids with you....you won't believe what you'll hear....I sat behind the Duke bench last year and was stunned by what came out of his mouth almost continuously......yet he is portrayed by the media almost as St. Mike.....what a joke!

No doubt Buzz has the awe shucks thing going for him....but it just plays differently for me...than does Roy's.  But as others here have pointed out...Roy is a good guy....and not a phony...and they seem more in the know on the matter than me...I was just going off of my perception/opinion..
