Title: Conference Records at this point
Post by: MarquetteDano on March 20, 2011, 04:01:09 AM
Thru the third round....

Conference       Record      Sweet Sixteen

ACC                   7-1            3
Mid Majors         14-9            4
PAC-10               4-3            1
Big Ten               7-6            2
Big East              9-9            2
Big Twelve          4-4            1
Low Majors          3-17          0

ACC doing it right now.  Mid Majors with an impressive showing as well, especially given that they haven't had four home games like the ACC at this point.

I saw this on a Syracuse board.

When the tournament started, the Big East had 11 of 68 teams which would be 16% of the field.

Assuming Notre Dame wins tonight, the Big East will have 3 teams in the Sweet Sixteen which would actually be 19% of the field.

You could say two teams were blocked from reaching the Sweet Sixteen by having to play conference opponents.  You could also make the case that the two conference match ups clinched two Sweet Sixteen spots for the Big East.

Still had to win their 1st round games, so not really a guarantee.

I think ND is going to have their hands full with Florida State tonight

Thru the first half of the third round....

Conference       Record      Sweet Sixteen

Big Ten               6-3           1
ACC                   4-1            1
Mid Majors         13-8           2
PAC-10               3-2           0
SEC                   4-3            2
Big East              8-7           1
Big Twelve          3-3           0
Low Majors          3-17         0

Before any other conference starts beating their chest, I would argue the Mid Majors are performing best to date with a 13-8 record and already two teams in the Sweet Sixteen. They have 13 victories from only 14 bids at this point.  VCU vs. Purdue and George Mason vs. OSU will be interesting tomorrow.

To bad we can't go back in time and put some of these teams like VCU, Richmond, Butler, George Mason etc. in the Big East or Big Ten and see how they'd have held up over a full season of conference play. I really have no clue how they'd have done.
