Dave Begel of OnMilwaukee.com had this to say about MU...
I'm not sure what to say about Marquette. But I hear that some influential alumni are growing disenchanted with Buzz Williams. His teams have not been great and some of the players he's recruited seem ill-suited for a principled Jesuit institution. When you start to lose the alumni at Marquette their patience wears thin quickly. And the alumni have incredible influence on the administration.
Considering he's writing for OnMilwaukee.com, I have a feeling he's simply trying to stir up some controversy and get himself some attention. I'm not sure which players he's talking about exactly (and I have a feeling that he doesn't either) but my guess is that he's taking a veiled shot at the Jucos based simply on some of the stereotypes of Juco players.
The rest of his article is pretty negative as well so that's probably just his MO. Whatever the case, just wanted to share it with the board.
link?
Begel generally is a bozo about 30 years past his prime. Don't know if I would take anything he wrote seriously anymore. Might as well bring back mike gonring also.
"Players recruited seem ill suited for the Jesuits" You have to be kidding me. Maybe Montreale Clark, but he never signed and made it on campus.
These are a great bunch of student athletes who have represented the university with pride. Not only this current class, but through the years. There have not been any arrests or even allegations of bad judgement. No student athletes have been dismissed because of grades. How can an author rest judgement without providing specific examples of "ill suited". Jesuits, my arse. What they don't like the hair or the tatoos? Can't stand this crap and I hope it doesn't get back to the athletes.
Hey, I think I found the link to the article. Looks like the Marquette section is only a paragraph of an article that consists of off the top of the head commentary from begel.

Is Buzz recruiting any different sorts of people than Al did 40 years ago? High quality people and high quality players, some from different backgrounds than many MU students, and put high expectations in front of them?
I don't remember the details, but I seem to remember him getting on Bart Starr's bad side.
He's gone from Journal reporter, to a TV gig to PR flak for ??(the school superintendant maybe) to onmilwaukee.com. Great career progression.
He was an idiot 30 years ago, and he's only gotten worse. I think his source is willie.
I am thinking that he wrote an honest peice on what he is hearing from connected sources.
The majority of Marquette fans support Buzz Williams and know that the program is heading in the right direction. However, it only takes a couple of unhappy geezers with a lot of money to have an impact on the administration. Money talks.
Also, old white guys generally don't have the ability to see past the tattoos and headbands. They don't understand phrases like GTST and the harmless nature of "three point goggles". In their eyes, they are seeing thugs flashing gang signs.
Where does this crap come from? It sounds like the jsonline boards.
Let's be fair to the writer and think he might have been talking about MUScoop three weeks ago. Fans are fickle. Who knows when he heard what he heard?
Love this:

You do see the hypocrisy here, right?

Yes, let me rephrase...

Begel wakes up from his afternoon nap every once in awhile and writes this kind of crappola. Any influential alumni that he has connections to are living at San Camillo or unliving at Calvary Cemetery.
Funny....I know hundreds of MU fans....never heard anyone mention tattoos, headbands, GTST, or 3 point goggles in any sort of negative way.
Headbands? really? Didn't hear a word about Lazar's headband in the 4 years he played here.
I swear people just make stuff up........ ::)

Yep.. not just old white guys, relatively younger ones too -- I've seen it happen on this very board, with guys saying they feel 'squeamish' over silly things. This Begel character would probably feel a lot better if we just had a few traditional players on the roster and not all these basketball-second dudes.
When did chico become 'respected alumni'?
Hey I'm one of those middle aged alums that gives bucks to the school and I know a lot of them like me. NONE of us feel this way.
MU has enough alums that if you look hard enough you can find one or two that think this, and probably think the moon is made a cheese too. So, he probably did find someone to say this but I don't think this is close to being a consensus view.
Dealing with powerful alum has to be the worst part of the job...a neccessary evil I guess.

ROFLMAO really!
In theory, I'm not crazy about having a roster full of JUCOs. But every single one of our players represent Marquette in an exemplary fashion. Love this team and these guys.
I just posted a response to the article, we'll see OnMilwaukee approves it.
Dick Strong really likes Buzz, so I'd say this is crap.

True but Dick's not a Marquette alumn, but rather a Wisconsin grad. If he wants Buzz to stay for at least another 4 years, Dick Strong will make it happen $$.

When I put my name on the side of the Al....wait, that's Another84...he's the "respected alumni".
Begal is a terrible 'sports' writer
I don't read on milwaukee because of him. some of his columns have been borderline offensive
Sidelight: Strong's MBA is from Wisconsin. His alma mater is Baldwin-Wallace. When his former firm first rose, the Ohio college was repeatedly mentioned as the place where he briefly played basketball before realizing that he would excel at something else, which was - for a long time - finance.
Maybe Begel's source is his boss and owner of OnMilwaukee.com, Jeff Sherman, a middle-aged MU alum??
