From what I remember, they had Penn St in the low 40's - I want to see where we are in comparison. We've played an incredibly difficult schedule this year (happens when 9 teams in your conference are top 25) and I don't think we're getting proper credit for it.
Tough to find the actual numbers the committee uses, because they guard that stuff close to protect the "real" RPI. According to rpiforecast, Marquette has a 27 SOS. That's the drawback to playing so many teams at the bottom of the RPI, they really drag down your SOS and overall RPI rating despite us playing one of the most brutal schedules in the country. I'd be curious to see a schedule strength if you took out teams 200 and below in the RPI. Remove our poorly selected cupcakes, and I'd guess we're probably top 5 in terms of schedule difficulty.

Brew, I know you have talked about this in other threads in the past couple weeks, but do you think Buzz and co. will work on that in the future? It seems to have hurt us the past couple of years.

I sincerely hope so, because as much as people say you can't predict what a team's RPI is going to be, you really can. Maybe not whether they'll be a 280 or a 325, but certainly whether they'll be a 175-250 or a 275-345. And if it's a buy game at home, that's a huge difference. All my free online time lately has been spent trying to evaluate seedings and figuring out who should be in and out, but sometime in the next couple months I plan to do a detailed breakdown of this on Cracked Sidewalks and how it can be fixed. I really believe it's easier than we sometimes make it out to be.

Jeff Sagarin rates our schedule the 7th toughest overall in the nation, joining seven other Big East teams in the top 10 Strength of Schedule.
We also played 16 top 25 Sagarin rated teams, tied with UConn (until tonight) with the most in the nation. That's a staggering number. As a comparison, Wisconsin played a grand total of 6 Sagarin top 25 teams. There are 10 top 25 Sagarin teams in the Big East alone. We've never played a schedule this tough, and it's not even close.

And this is exactly why SOS is so subjective. 7th according to Sagarin, 21st according to kenpom, and 27th according to RPIForecast. Who knows how CBS or the Selection Committee figures out their SOS?

One thing is consistent with all of them: the amount of top-flight competition we faced was the most in the nation. Sagarin's SOS is higher because the outliers (really tough teams and really sh*tty teams) are weighted less, so the 300+ teams don't matter as much in the equation.

Here's another way to look at this year's schedule strength (Sagarin schedule strength rank) [#Sagarin top 25 teams faced overall] {#Sagarin top 25 teams in Big East}
2011: (7) [16] {10}
2010: (33) [9] {4}
2009: (44) [9] {7} including MU but we can't play against ourselves so really 6 potential opponents
2008: (35) [12] {6} including MU but we can't play against ourselves so really 5 potential opponents
2007: (56) [9] {4}
2006: (17) [8] {5}
Any way you want to look at it, this was by far our toughest schedule. Next year will be much easier with all the talent that other Big East teams are slated to lose and a much softer non-conference schedule, so we should see our record "normalize" to a level at or above previous years

I'm well aware that our schedule was hard as hell. I'm just not sure that the pundits are aware of it and I was wondering if the "Official" SOS reflected it. I am also aware that the pundits are not the selection committee and hopefully they will be very aware of the difficulty this year for all of the BE teams.
