Title: Jae's Free Throws
Post by: leever on March 09, 2011, 10:10:50 AM
Watched the game on ESPN3 and after Jae missed 2 free throws it looked like he was late getting back on defense and pretty much watched a Providence player score on a layup while Jae was still trying to get his mouth guard back in place.

Not trying to be negative after a great win - - but we really need Jae to get out of his recent funk.  Maybe a big game for him tonight against WVU?

Saw that too.  If you look at it again, it looks like he was trying to keep his mouth guard from falling out of his sock and it slowed him up a step.

I thought Jae played pretty well yesterday. He certainly played hard.

It appears that Jae tucks his mouth guard in his compression shorts when he shoots free throws.  I've noticed him scrambling to put it back in his mouth multiple times this year as he retreats down the court to play defense (usually after missing the 2nd free throw).  None was more obvious than in last night's game when he was late getting back on D on that transition basket while fumbling with his mouth guard.

Taking it out when shooting free throws clearly hasn't helped his percentage.  Perhaps he should leave it in or move to the back of the circle to be closer to the 3-point line.

That being said, he was tough last night and had his best game in awhile.  He'll need to continue to play at this level for MU to advance.

Agreed.  Obviously pumped that we played great, LOVE Jae's energy...but I've been concerned about his play on the offensive side of the ball.  I don't know if it's tied to him not consistently starting lately, his severe drop in his 3 pt shooting %, but getting Jae to perform at the offensive level he was playing @ a month ago is crucial to the post-season success of our squad.
