Title: Tough day for non-constructive critics of MU on this board
Post by: bamamarquettefan on March 07, 2011, 11:05:35 PM
It had to be a tough day for the minority on this board who belittle the team and Buzz with non-constructive criticism.  If you are one of the ones "embarrassed" by the team, or "on the ledge," or that "don't accept anything but winning" (because somehow that makes the program better) or say  "11th place isn't cutting it" in a conference in which the 9th and 10th place teams are both in the national Top 25,  or blindly assert things like, "MU obviously doesn't belong in the tournament," or "obviously Buzz is a bad coach," without any backup argument, then hopefully you couldn't get on the computer or watch TV today.  If you did, it was probably painful to see:

Lunardi says he believes MU is in the tourney even if they lose to Providence, and leaves them as a Number 10-seed.  This has to be tough for the critics who thought the Seton Hall loss finally proved they were right and that MU and Buzz were terrible.

RPI Forecast says that if the committee weights the criteria the same as they have the last 10 years then Lunardi is actually being too tough on MU as MU really calculates as the top 9-seed (and is then moved up to a 7-seed due to matchups).

The game that was actually held up as MUs one "bad loss" on TV a couple of weeks ago, Gonzaga, easily wins the WCC so will move up higher than its current rating as the 35th best team in the county.  So that means that in addition to being one of only 23 teams with no bad losses (out of top 100) in the country, every MU loss has been to one of the best 35 teams in the country except for the loss at Seton Hall, which has been one of the best 35 teams in the country since their star player came back from injury and beat St. John's by more than they won over Marquette.

VCU wins and therefore doesn't eliminate one of the eight+ team cushion that MU has from elimiantion based on both Lunardi and rpiforecast.

For the rest of us who are actually enjoying the fact that on Sunday MU may become one of only 10 teams in the country to make the NCAA tournament for the 6th straight season, it's really fun being a Marquette fan!  For the critics, I can't imagine how grumpy you would be if you were a fan of one of the 336 teams that has dared to miss the tournament during at least one of the last five years!

But don't worry, there will be a better day for you!  Even if MU makes the tournament, there is a 99% chance the season will end with a loss eventually and you will be vindicated!

This is not to criticize the constructive critics who actually point out things like that it hurts our RPI to schedule teams like Centenary, or that the hustle is great but that something is wrong with the defensive rotation, etc.

Great day for MU. Can you imagine what tomorrow will be like when we actually play and win? Euphoria won't do it justice.

Yes. He had the picture right, as their loss made sure there would be no bid stealer from the CAA, but the result wrong.

oops, I'm occasionally goofy that way, but glad you knew what I meant.  VCU lost, and tha tis good.

I know I am 100% MU now because I grew up 1 mile from VCU and rooted for them all my life, and even came back to see them play during break from MU while in school in the 80s, so the are legitimately my 2nd favorite team but the fact that they could possibly cost MU a bid had me rooting against my second favorite team tonight.

I don't really understand the point of this thread.  You are apparently calling out the "non-constructive critics" because they were speculating that we wouldn't make the tourney based on our "bad loss" to SH, then you proceed to use speculation that we will make the tournament to prove your point.

There are a number of potential scenarios that could still place us on the wrong side of the bubble.  If that happens, you will have all of the "non-constructive critics" on here shouting "I told you so."  To paraphrase The Gambler, I wouldn't count your money till the dealin's done.

In my opinion this thread was directed at people who come out of the woodwork after a loss dragging their emotions into their analysis.

Thanks for the post.  Now let's hope MU wins today or the critics will resurface like weeds in a garden.

nope, a crappy defensive coach one day, a crappy defensive coach the next. And how about those paint touches.

I understand some negativity groove, but really.  I won't comb through your hundreds of posts, but just being on this board, roughly 90-95% are critical, negative, and some down right mean-spirited.  What gives?

Clearly you care about MU B-Ball (we all do, cause we are nerds posting on a message board), but if something you care about causes you this much pain (at least enough to spit out vitriol a few times a day), why bother?

Because he can do it anonymously, which makes it OK.

Well done Bama!  Nice to read a refreshing piece with some perspective.  Thankfully other than Groove, this thread has yet to be tainted by the resident doom and gloom posters.  Probably only a matter of time till we get some good negativity injected into this thread..

In which case I'll be embarrassed.  I'll be proud if it doesn't, though.

Very good post.  The fact that "fans" can be upset that we are a bubble team, in a new coach's 3rds season, says that Marquette is doing a lot right!  Success sure has made some critics out of many.  I'm old enough to remember that getting into the NCAA's was a big deal for a number of years.  Now, some aren't even happy if we barely get in...?  Wow.  I guess I'll take that negativity over actually being bad.

Anyway, I hope we win tonight, as I think that probably puts us in.  If we loose, regardless of what the experts say, I won't expect to make it in as conference tournament upsets happen.

It will be an interesting game tonight, to see how the team responds to the adversity and critics.  I for one support them regardless.  It isn't just about winning between the lines.

Here in MHO, is also an excellent post.  Reinko, I think that you have asked a tough question that calls out Groove on his overall contributions to the board without any personal attacks.  I hope that Groove provides a similarly minded response.

+1 When the things you love deliver anger and pain on one end but very little joy on the other that spells problems.
