Title: Come back, Kevin...
Post by: silverback on March 06, 2011, 02:52:14 AM
After listening to our down-home Texas brush popper coach stumble his way through another "learning experience," I had the pleasure of watching Kevin O'Neill's tougher, harder-working USC team beat Washington. You know -- that team whose threes we couldn't defend in the NCAA tourney last year? Those Huskies...

What a pleasure to watch a team that works hard, defends every play, dives for every loose ball, and reports back to a coach who answers questions in a straight-up, level-headed way without unpacking some humble pie Alamo analogy...

now that's what i call throwing red meat out there looking for some attention.  i loved kevin o when he was here and i think the players kind of got off on him too.  he came here with a reputation as a great recruiter and was the spark we needed to turn our program around, BUT i think his, shall we say, salty language did him in.  i could just see the jumpin jesuits, probaby a few times saying umm kev, yer a great guy and we like what you've done with the program and all, but could you consider cleaning up the lingo just a teeny tiny bit.  ko probably replied f*** off and a bolt of lightning sent him back west

KO is a good coach and I enjoy watching his teams, but his 5-year stint at Marquette was the longest he has ever held any coaching position (not just as a head coach). USC actually marks his 14th coaching stop in 31 seasons. In other words, he wears out his welcome very quickly.

I don't really want KO back, but could we download the part of his brain that contains the keywords "basketball defense" into Buzz's?  Or is that the same part that contains the salty language?

The revisionist history on O'Neill is amusing. Yes, we played good D. It was also very difficult at times to figure out if there was an objective on offense. He was also crass beyond belief and a time bomb who rubbed many the wrong way. I liked O'Neill for the most part, but quite honestly, wouldn't trade him for Buzz if given the chance. That said, I agree wholeheartedly it would be nice to see far better defense than we have seen the past couple years.
