Title: Recruiting 2011-2012
Post by: brewcity77 on March 03, 2011, 11:21:28 PM
Okay, as most of us suspected, JP Tokoto picked UNC over us. My question is where do we go from here? No more worries about trying to hold a 2011 scholarship, so here's the situation:

Outgoing: F Jimmy Butler, F Joe Fulce, G Dwight Buycks, G Reggie Smith
Incoming: F Juan Anderson, G Derrick Wilson
Considering: F Jarion Henry, G Todd Mayo, G Cezar Guerrero, F Kevin Thomas, C Keith Coleman

2012 will give us even fewer options. Unless someone else ends up transferring, we only have two scholarships available.

Outgoing: G Darius Johnson-Odom, F Jae Crowder
Incoming: G/F Jamal Ferguson
Considering: F Jarnell Stokes, F Marcus Smart, G Gabe York, F Philip Nolan, F Jarmal Reid, G Je'lon Hornbeak, C Shaquille Cleare

My thoughts are that we need to add a scoring guard to replace DJO, a point guard to add depth and replace the departure of Buycks and Smith, and another big man for depth and development. Todd Mayo certainly has the requisite talent and is widely regarded as one of the best remaining guards for 2011, and would be in a perfect position to take over when DJO leaves. Depth-wise, I think we need another point sooner rather than later. Cezar Guerrero would be perfect, but if we can't get him, Buzz should focus on getting the best player he can, whether a point or a big man. Then pursue the other in 2012. I think 2012 is best for a big because of the guys we're in on. Jarnell Stokes and Shaquille Cleare are both top 25 big men, while Philip Nolan is a top 100 with Milwaukee roots. Plenty of options there.

Either way, Tokoto was always a long shot for anyone not named Roy Williams. Hope he finds lots of success there, and hope that Buzz has some guys lined up to keep our talent well deep.

It was on the board earlier, go to youtube to check him out, lefty, looks taller than DJO,  picked
Oklahoma over MU.  Looks solid, got a concussion of some type and did not play this year, and
transferred to a Junior College.  Right up Buzz's alley. but would have 4 years at MU.  Top 100
kid last year.

We need a closer. A guy that isn't afraid to want the ball in his hands in crunch time and has no fear in rising up and shooting the dam ball.

Good stuff ..... a few other names

2011 --
MU is also pushing for a visit from JUCO guard Jeremy Jones http://tinyurl.com/6ldg94f (http://tinyurl.com/6ldg94f)
6'8" power forward Ryan Rhoomes http://twitter.com/#!/justinrod845/status/42666728056045568 (http://twitter.com/#!/justinrod845/status/42666728056045568)

In 2012 (maybe he gets reclassified to 2011?) add 6'10" Mitch McGary as a target http://tinyurl.com/68v44bk (http://tinyurl.com/68v44bk)

I would have to take a hard look at Coleman.  He is 6ft 9in and goes around 240.  Heck, he looks like he is 25 years old.

MU could use someone like this (if he has the talent), that could be a power forward with strength and intimidation.  Someone to bang the boards, grab and actually hold on to the ball.  A presence under the basket.

The staff evaluates talent and hoping they are looking for the same.

Other spot goes to a shooting guard.  Good luck Buzz.......

Doris, I could not have said it better myself. I hope Vander is that closer in the years to come, but I agree lets find someone who can jam the ball down our opponent's throat -- and make them taste every square inch of it!

Rhoomes is originally a 2010 prospect who went to prep for a year.  We'd get him for four years.

Some other guys we were looking at for 2012 class that would be good additions:
Marcus Smart 6'4" 2G from Texas rated 22 overall by Rivals

At Center/PF we were looking at Phil Nolan 6'10" who is now in W. Va. and has Wisconsin ties, rated 89 overall by Rivals
Prince Ibeh 6'10" of Texas who is rated 123 overall by Rivals
6'8" Wannah Bail from Texas who is rated 15 overall by Rivals--he may be considered a SF.

Any body know current status of these guys?

From a name standpoint, it would be good to get Prince and Wannah. We could then have a front line in 2012-13 of Ox, Prince and Wannah. Vitale would have a great time with those names.

Not as of yet. He'd be another solid get for 2011 and is reportedly going to make his announcement in April when the late signing period opens up. His numbers were even better this year, after averaging 13/13 as a freshman he put up 23/12 as a sophomore. He seems to be getting a lot of interest from St. John's, Kentucky, Iowa, Cincinnati, and other schools. He's another guy I'd like personally, especially with Buzz's JUCO history, though I do think a point is a bigger need.

Looking at TJ Taylor, I like him a lot. He looks like exactly what we need at the point, almost to the "too good to be true" level. He can score, has great range, a beautiful jumper, good court vision, and plays solid defense. Granted, it's a mix tape, but based on this, he would look so good in Blue and Gold:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=613UNU5m1_c

He redshirted at Oklahoma and never played there, I'm not sure how that would impact his eligibility. He left the program in December as a redshirt freshman. As far as I can glean, he will play at Paris Junior College in Texas in 2011-12, and then be available for another D1 program in 2012-13, most likely coming in as a sophomore as he never used any of his freshman eligibility. From what I've read, he may want to stay closer to home, possibly the reason he left Oklahoma. If so, Texas and TAMU were in on him originally, and SMU has emerged as a possible candidate. Hopefully Buzz can use his Texas background to lure this kid in. He's described as a gym rat that was three-time all-state in Texas. Not sure how easy it will be waiting another year for another point, but if we did, he may be worth it.

I'm a big fan of this kid. His height is deceiving, he's listed at 6'4" to 6'5", but has a wingspan of 6'10". If he can get a more consistent shot and play the 2, he could be a ridiculously dominant defender as well. That kind of length is fantastic.

Found this Ryan Rhoomes update on a West Virginia website...I'd like to think it's a WVU leaning article, but the fact is that the kid is quoted multiple times as saying that WVU has always been his first choice; the only thing that worries him is leaving an urban environment for Morgantown, WV.

The article claims Rhoomes is up to 6'9" 220lbs now...I'd love to see that kind of size added to our interior depth.

http://wvillustrated.com/wvubasketball/recruitdetail/detail/81

All that being said, though, I personally think that Cadougan has really shown major strides in the tail end of this season and think he can carry the load at the PG position next season.  I say you use the final two 2011 schollies on Mayo and a big man (Coleman or Rhoomes) and then wait and see if Derrick Wilson can play the point before determining whether or not the last 2012 scholarship should be used on another pg or another big

Personally, my only worry with going into 2011-12 with Derrick Wilson as our only backup point guard is that I'm not sure he's a point guard. Most of the descriptions I've seen seem to indicate he's more a scoring guard. I'm not sure that he's a true "1", which is why I'd love to see Guerrero.

Pretty much every scouting site and description of Wilson out there lists him as a point guard. The knockon him had/has been that he needs to improve some of his "traditional" point guard skills, i.e. running a half-court set, but he's not projected at any other position.

This would be the best possible situation for marqueete. Mayo and guererro commit. Then gabe york philip nolan amd another big for 2012. We would have incredible talent.

And it explains by JP Tokoto's decision isn't really a loss for MU.    Buzz already has his switchable in-hand for the 2012 class.

agreed ... this team needs another competent ball handler.  DJO is not a combo guard and since we know Buzz struggles to trust freshmen for extended time, it might be wrong to assume that Wilson will get consistent minutes at the point and be productive. Adding Guerrero could help, but Jeremy Jones might fit  even better

And he may have had a pretty good understanding of where MU fit with JPT by that point.  That was right about the time he had indicated that MU wasn't in his top five, and then back tracked.

We'd have to have a few people leave for that to happen. We could add Mayo and Guerrero as we have 2 scholarships for 2011 left, but we only have one for 2012 after adding Ferguson. We could get York, Nolan, or another big, but not all three unless two guys currently on the roster or already committed transferred elsewhere.

Small ball.   Next year, we will be 6'11, 6'8, 6'6, 6'2,6'1     with a 6'9 widebody, 6'6,6'7, 6'8 switchables,  6'4 6'1 and 6'3 (singleton) off of the bench.   That isn't small.   Missing a face up 4, but the biggest lineup since the final 4 team.
