Title: Big East Tournament - Through 2/27/11
Post by: MUBasketball on February 27, 2011, 07:17:48 PM
**Note: There is a logjam at 9-7...I can't say with 100% certainty that I computed the tie-breakers properly, but I'm pretty confident I did. Treated the 5 teams that are 9-7 as a mini-conference and then compared the W-L records for each against the other 4 schools for the tiebreaker. I think that's right.

Movement since last bracket (Monday night, 2-21):
Marquette +3
Louisville +1
St. John's +1
Syracuse +1
South Florida +1
Cincinnati -1
Providence -1
West Virginia -2
Georgetown -3

I've got my fingers crossed we can somehow get another shot at Louisville...

I think I would like that 7th seed right now.

I was thinking the same exact thing!  Pitt and SJU are the two team I'd like to avoid the longest.

Seeing Notre Dame or Louisville again would be fine with me.

I'd like either 6 or 7, just so I would get to watch the game

Id actually just like to avoid that match up with Uconn to be honest

Me too. Very hard to beat a team like that 2 times in a row in such a short amount of time. I agree with others that the 7 seeds appears to be the best. WVU, Nova and ND can be beaten without a phenomenal game on a neutral court. I also agree that a match up with Louisville would be very interesting. But, it is very likely that they will end with the fourth seed, as SJU plays @Hall and vs. South Florida, to close out the regular season. This would mean we would need to get two wins just to see the Cardinals in the semi's.

We take Notre Dame on a Garden floor.

Absolutely agree.  They beat us at home and even Buzz doesn't know how we beat them this week.  No thanks on that matchup, especially with Calhoun back.

I hope you are right, but I just posted on Cracked Sidewalks that UConn would have the final bye at 8th right now and we would be 9th.

UConn miniconference record 3-1 (beat Cincy, MU and Nova, lost to MU)

MU miniconference record 2-2 (beat UConn, WVU, lost to UConn, Nova)

However, as confusing as it is I hope I missing something and your bracket is right - and if not we can easily tip it with 2 wins to close out

I dont think its likely we end up with Uconn anyways. If we win our last 2 I really doubt we get them then.
Title: think its UConn 7th, Nova 8th, MU 9th today

Gosh, now in looking at that I had to change my original post.

It appears Nova and UConn are actually tied for 7th based on both being 3-1 in the miniconference, and actually UConn would get 7th based on the next tie-breaker of beating Nova.  So it would be Nova 8th and MU 9th, giving us a game vs. DePaul, then Nova then Pitt.

I believe that's right ... but with Nova traveling to ND and Pitt to close out, they could drop to 11th place in the end - wow.

Another shot at ND/Louisville would be perfect if we win our first game.  I actually rather have Louisville.  That type of win is perfect for the pundits to talk about since most like to point out our close loss to them.  A 7 seed would be our mostly likely path to that happening so hopefully Buzz can make that happen.

If we end up tied with UConn wouldn't we hold a tie breaker with them as long as they don't beat ND this week since we beat the Irish way back when in January?

If we are tied with just UConn then yes because we would be 1-1 v. ND and UConn would be 0-2 v. ND.  Even if we end up tied with UConn and they beat ND this week, we keep the advantage (as long as Cuse beats Depaul - so Cuse does not get caught by G'Town).

This is interesting...

1. Pitt (15-3)
2. Old Spice Classic Champions (13-5)
3. Louisville (12-6) (win over Syracuse and St. John's)
4. Syracuse (12-6) (win over St. John's)
5. St. John's (12-6)
6. UConn (10-8) (4-2 record in mini round robin)
7. Villanova (10-8) (3-2 record in mini round robin)
8. West Virginia (10-8) (3-2 record in mini round robin)
9. Marquette (10-8) (3-3 record in min round robin)
10. Cincy (10-8) (2-4 record in mini round robin (both wins over Georgetown))
11. Georgetown (10-8) (2-4 record in mini round robin)
12. Seton Hall (6-12)
13. Rutgers (5-13)
14. Providence (4-14)
15. South Florida (3-15)
16. DePaul (1-17)

Our road: DePaul, West Virgina, Pitt, Syracuse, Old Spice Classic Champs

Last Week Games with Pomeroy Chances
UConn- @ West Virgina, Home to ND, .475 average; I think we would like 2 losses here, ending at 9-9

Villanova- at ND, at Pitt, .26 average; 2 more losses would be good, ending at 9-9 (not sure how Pomeroy thinks they will win one more game)

West Virgina- UConn and Louisville at home, .655 average; I think we would like a W over UConn and a loss to Louisville, ending at 10-8

Marquette- home to Cincy, at Seton Hall, .605 average; Obviously we would like 2 wins, resulting at 11-7

Cincy- at Marquette, home to Georgetown, .49 average; We want a loss to us and a win over Georgetown, resulting at 10-8

Georgetown- at Cincy, .37; we need a loss to Cincy, resulting at 10-8

Best Case Scenario is listed above and MU gets the six seed.
I think UConn beats ND at home and WV beats Louisville at home, which still gets us the 6 seed as we hold the tiebreaker over West Virginia.  Bottom line is we need to win out with Wednesday's game looking a little more important in terms of seeding for the Big East tournament.
