Title: I really think this is the turning point
Post by: Doris Burkes Thong on February 24, 2011, 08:45:33 PM
This team looked like they were done inside what about 30 seconds left in regulation of that game. They were on the verge of having a 7-8 conference record, missing they're last chance to get a marquee road win, and basically being on the outside of the bubble looking in needing to win their final 3 games and win prolly 2 games in the BET to get an NCAA bid. Despite that they still found a way to get it to OT where they just came alive and had that mental edge where they just knew they were going to win the game it seemed like for once and they weren't playing timid. DJO just looked like a completely different player too. What a monumental win in my book in terms of the overall success of this season.

Agreed.  It's been awhile since we've had a confidence building win that these inexperienced players desperately need.  Should help the confidence down the road!

We just need to arrange that Calhoun misses our games vs. them. Seems to be the difference

The Cincy game will be big still. We know all will be tough.

But it all starts with Marshon Brooks on Sunday.

We have to smell that 11-7 opportunity.

ESPN likes us enough to give us another front page dig, and probably will get some big play on SC tonight.

Katz seems to be pretty high on us, I guess he must have had some personal things to deal with instead of watching the St. John's game. Lunardi seems to like us too.

It will be interesting. I think if we win out and our first round game then we're in, without a doubt. This UCONNVICT game was the big one, and we got it, thank Christ.

This was one of the best performances as a team of the year. UCONN was 8-1 at home coming into this and despite missing 10 free throws and basically shooting ourselves in the foot on some plays, they found a way to stick together as a team and pull out the win. Forced a lot of turnovers and had solid play down the stretch.

Grind together shine together

Heard on the radio that we shot 20 something % in the second half and 7-10% over a long period of time.  Buzz said if you look at the stats there is no way we should have won this game.  Also said while me missed shots none were bad shots.  Big time when it counted.

Should be overwhelming favorites to beat Providence at home.

I think Cincy game is big.  We beat them, then there will not be intense pressure to win at Seton Hall.

Beat Prov and Cincy and its a done deal.  Seton Hall and BE tournament will then be for higher seeding.

The UCONN win should propel the team's emotions and I don't see a letdown.  The Louisville loss was a letdown and effected the team's play since that game.  This win tonight should put them back on track, but must get those home wins.

This kind of reminds me of our win @UCONN last year, really turned things around for us after a slow start in the BE.

Unbelievable victory, I thought we had no chance after the second half let down.  The team really impressed me tonight with their resiliance.  Making the tournament is not for sure yet, but its looking pretty good right now.  Lets keep it up!!!

Could happen again next year if Marquette and UConn play early in the Big East schedule.

I also hope this is a win that springboards the team into a nice winning streak over the rest of the games.

That said, i at least won't read to much into the win.

We kinda caught a break that UConn turned it over to allow the chance for the game to enter OT, even though the defense contributed to that turnover.

In many close wins or losses, sometimes luck good or bad is a partial factor in who ends up winning, as is guys on either team simply making or missing a late jumper. A long rebound off a missed jumper late in a game finding the hands of the guys on offense. A loose ball finds your team instead of the opponent. On a tied ball very late in a close game, the possession arrow is pointed your way.

So while i liked the overall effort of the team tonight in winning a close game, i don't think the effort was much different in some of the close losses. The players just executed better late in the game/OT, DJO got hot in overtime instead of missing some of those shots, and thankfully Walker made a bad pass late in regulation when we badly needed a turnover.

Generally in sports, if a team plays a lot of close games and starts out losing or winning a sizable percentage of those close games, simple odds will see that trend reverse to some degree.

...so if that's true, we still have a bunch of breaks coming our way!

A turning point only happens when we actually start to consistently play well.  Only time will tell.

I hope they turn away from those dismal second half beginnings

Agree and last night wasn't representative of that.  Here we go again could be heard from MU fans around the nation.  You look at the stats and it's amazing we won.  Buzz basically said the same thing, but you take it and move.  But we still have things that need to be cleaned up with time running out.  These second half collapses...ugh.  The scoring droughts, etc.

Need to take care of business in the next two.
