Title: St. Johns Ranked This Week - MU Leads The Nation In Top 25 Games
Post by: Tugg Speedman on February 21, 2011, 02:26:37 PM
St. Johns is ranked this week (#25 USA).  That means we have played 12 games against the CURRENT top 25 (11 different teams plus ND twice).  13 when we play Uconn on Thursday.

This leads the nation for games played against the currently ranked teams.

We are 0 - 7 against these teams on the road.
We are 2 - 3 at home against these teams at home (as WVU dropped out of the rankings last week).

If WVU has a good week and gets back into the rankings, we could have 14 games against current ranked teams.

From 1985 to 1993 we played a total of 15 ranked teams.  We have done the same in three months.

The Storm will be tough to quell at the BE Tourney.

This season in the BEast is just insane.  How can anyone be disappointed with MU at 7-7? Pitt is only 2 games ahead of ND which is only one game ahead of 4 other teams.  I think MU should win every game just like other fans, but man, if you stand back and be objective, the season is in no way a bust.

I'm still not over the Louisville game.

I'm just hoping MU continues it's current streak of double digit BEast conference wins this season.  That would make 7 seasons in a row with at least 10 wins in conference?  And tied with Pitt as the only teams to accomplish this feat over the last 7 seasons?

That's pretty impressive.

I agree.  I would be so much more comfortable sitting at 8-6.

I would rather BE one of the ranked teams than PLAY ranked teams.

BEAT the ranked teams and you BECOME a ranked team.

If they can get to 10 wins this year, I believe it would be their 6th in a row with double digit Big East wins, not 7th.

It's the difference in the season.

MU will be 9-8 heading into Newark. That will suck donkey because Hazell will want to go out with a 40 day in his last showing.

The sweat wouldn't be as beady if they were 10-7 heading into that game. Pitino continues to haunt Marquette.

Lawrence, I will remember the Louisville game on my deathbed.

As miserable as it must have been to watch that game, i'm so thankful that my buddy called me and told me to delete from from DVR and to not watch under any circumstances.

I was gone and couldn't watch it live, so i set it for my DVR. When i got home i called my friend because we were going to go out later on, but i said i wanted to watch the Marquette game first. He proceeded to tell me to immediately delete it for my own sanity because he literally felt nauseous after watching it live. After he explained why, i thanked him and deleted the game.

This is so true. After every MU loss this game always pops into my mind....I think what could've been because that would've been MU's signature road win right now and would look real good with the home wins over ND and 'Cuse. With that win there would be no bubble talk at the moment. Hell, with the Vanderbilt win there would be no bubble talk at the moment either. I agree with what the other poster said I will never forget that 'Ville loss for the rest of my life. Man, how the hell did we blow a 18 point lead with 5 minutes and some change left? Unfuggin real. And I might add that I don't think this team has played as good of a brand of basketball it had been playing leading up to that Louisville game and especially for the first 35 minutes of it. Team just hasn't been quite the same since, especially in 2nd halves. Can't blame them though as us fans haven't been the same since either and we don't have to go to practice every day.

Yeah, I was at the Louisville game. The guy sitting next to me was riding his team pretty hard and actually left with 6 minutes to go.  That's the only thing that I can smile about.  I just sat there stunned.  The Louisville people were pretty sympathetic after the game.  I still have nightmares and I don't think I will ever count a game won until the final buzzer again.

We were traveling that day also so I DVR'd the game. The minute we got home I hit the erase button. Never watched a second of it.

The good news is if we had hit two more free throws, it wouldn't have mattered...even though we lost only by one.   ;D

Yes it is!!To bad our resident expert predicted a down year for the Big East before he ever saw a game. Oh wait, he does not need to see anyone play before forming an opinion.

Did you make a wrong turn on your way to the IU board?

I know we have some fans that would rather go back to a weaker conference so we could repeat the 1971 strategy of winning an nit banner without playing a single ranked team all season, but I'll take this year. Battling the best teams in the country in close, tv games all year.  Now let's just take it up one notch and turn these close losses into close wins, and let's try to avoid playing sju in the be. Don't think we will win that one by 30 this year.

Those stats - the games vs ranked teams - should headline every, single loss from here out. And they should lead the way leading the way to next season to keep fans away from the ledge. Those that are quick to criticize....won't do them much good, but it couldn't hurt.

??

We won the 1970 NIT (Not 1971) banner because we CHOSE not to be in the NCAA tournament.  We were ranked #10 (#8 in the AP) in the nation and got screwed with where the NCAA was going to send us.  So Al and the team told the NCAA to stick it where the Sun Don't Shine and we went to the NIT instead.

http://espn.go.com/classic/s/2001/0126/1041658.html

You are correct, we didn't play any ranked teams in 1969-70...of course we were an Independent back then and not even in a "weaker conference" as you call it.

I don't know anyone here that is saying we should get out of the Big East.  That being said, if we're going to play in the Big East we should be in it to succeed. So far we have in the first five years while ALWAYS finishing in the upper division.  Let's hope that doesn't change.

I don't think so...I thought banners were for WINNING stuff...like the Maui Invitational, NIT, National Catholic Championship, NCAA Tournament, etc.

Seems here that people want to give away trophies because when we lose it's by less than 10 points and we played a bunch of tough teams.

Yeah, we play a tough schedule as far as the country goes, but we haven't even played a top 3 schedule in our own conference.  http://www.kenpom.com/conf.php?c=BE    People need to put some things in perspective.  We're supposed to be a big boy program and with a big boy schedule.  As of tonight, we haven't even played the toughest schedule in our own state (MU 32nd ranked while Wisconsin is at 19th).
