Title: Calm down....
Post by: 96warrior on February 15, 2011, 10:44:24 PM
This game sucked. 3 St Johns players fouled out but we don't capitalize at the free throw line. Sequence of 3 consecutive St Johns turnovers and we only convert on one. Can't get a fracking defensive rebound and St Johns gets repeated attempts to score. Blah blah blah.

It is mid-February and we just lost our first game by double digits. More than halfway through conference play and we had our first bad loss. And even that is debatable...St Johns has been tough this year (just ask Duke).

Calm down people. No one needs to get fired. No one needs to get thrown off the team. The university does not need to shut down. This season is not over and the Dance is not out of the question.

I am not ashamed of these guys, who just had a bad night. I am not ashamed of these guys, who play their damn hearts and souls out for this team. I am ashamed of this fans at the game who booed their team on their home court and I ashamed of the posters who say vile things about their players on a "fan board".

We have been having quite a few bad nights recently.

the thing about "bad nights" is it implies they are outliers, or one-time occurrences. At least 5 league games where MU had a 5+ point second half lead and lost? It's not just a "bad night" anymore. It's a bad team.

And frankly, I resent the concept that just because this is a "fan board" that criticism of the team and its lackluster performance is somehow off-limits. If anything, this is the place for it. It's our baby. We get to call it ugly.

Refreshing and yes.  It shows people care, unfortunately most are labeled as haters for bringing these things up.  Crazy.  The irony, I still don't think we're out of it and can claw back if Buzz can turn these guys quickly.  Having said that, 25 games into the season you don't often change the stripes of your team...you are what you are.

Hoping for the best down the stretch.

There is a big difference between constructive criticism, which of course this team warrants, and the outright, downright venom that gets spewed around here after a loss. I blame Al Gore for inventing the Internet and giving people an anonymous platform from which they can say the most insulting, disrespectful things they can, and I blame the posters for not maintaining a sense of decency.

If the legacy of this team was they lost close games they should have won, and they couldn't play a second half to save their lives, so be it. Their legacy won't be they didn't compete each and every night they were on the floor. The deserve respect from their fan base. They do not deserve to be booed on their home court for losing to a worthy opponent.

For the record, I am just as wary as anyone going into the half because I don't think these guys play well in the second half. I am prepared to be disappointed even with a lead. This team's play could be better. Attack the game, not the guys. That's all I am saying.

If you resent the comment, you are being defensive. I never said there was no room for criticism.
