Title: Title game?
Post by: PE8983 on January 27, 2011, 10:27:13 PM
Evidently, the college bball season just ended.  IU beats #21 Illinois, the fans rush the court, and act like they just won the natl championship.  "It's Indiana" Crean goes and kisses the fam for a bit.  Evidently there's not enough time for that after showing some class, and respecting your opponent by first shaking some hands.  Then goes down the line shaking hands with a look on his face like his dog just died.  "Good game" to Weber, no talking with any Illinois players except McCamey.  After shaking hands in line, acts like he just won it all in his interview.  "Look at these fans..." and "This is the ultimate in college basketball..."  Then goes and takes the game ball, points up up to the stands.

How the mighty have fallen...

I painfully remember the East Carolina and DePaul games when their fans rushed the court when we lost.

So, when was the last time MU fans rushed the court after we won?

I really can't remember seeing it.  At this point though, I'd rush the court to beat a ranked team.

I can't really throw any stones since I was among those who rushed the court at the Mecca after beating South Florida in the NIT in '95.

Didn't the fans rush the court after beating Cincy to win C-USA?

Yes, and it was awesome.  My friends and I got to sit on the visiting bench for senior night ceremonies afterward too.  It has to be somewhat special I agree, but I am completely in favor of rushing the court for the right occasion after the fun we had doing it in '03.

So, the last three times MU fans rushed the court ....

* 2003 against Cincy

* 1995, NIT game in the Mecca against South Florida

* 1981, Doc Rivers 25 foot buzzer shot against ND

Any others?

Other than DePaul last year and the East Carolina game (I forget the date), are their other times that MU was rushed upon?

Senior Day, 2004. Daemon Mason hit the baseline jumper and one against Louisville.

That was the last rushing, and will probably remain that way.

Thought it was quite amusing that a school with 5 national championships has resulted in the rushing of the court after beating the #21 team in the country at home.  Sorry that you thought it was appropriate.  If it was a waste of your time to read it, then how sad it is that you took the time to respond.

I think this brings up an interesting philosophical debate on rushing.

Undoubtedly IU would explain this as recognizing that they are turning a corner, and they are right that this is likely a big win for the program.  Given the recruiting turnaround, it seems like this might be a win that begins their turnaround (at least I'm sure that's what they're hoping).  Yet on the other hand, they are a prestigious program and would seem to not really have the underdog capital to justify rushing the court against anyone in the Big10/12.

It kind of reminds me of 2005 when there was a huge push to rush after we beat then #1/2 UConn in our first BEast game.  While it was a huge "we have arrived" moment. How do you play that? Do you rush or do you simply act like you've been there before?  If you should act like you've been there before, then when CAN you rush?

When you win something (other than a single game against an average opponent). Despite Crean's name dropping comment...

"These guys really, really earned it," Indiana coach Tom Crean said. "They put forth a tremendous effort and energy, and like my brother-in-law [Baltimore Ravens coach] John Harbaugh said in a text tonight, 'Your team came of age.' "

...when they go and lose 9 of their last 10 games it doesn't mean much. Win a conference title, beat a team you haven't beaten in 20 years, etc. That said, I am all for enjoying the small victories, especially when they are so few and far between.

The other instance I would say is if there are circumstances that make it something more meaningful (last second win over a huge rival, triple overtime, or something like that) To this day, that NIT game against USF was one of the most fun MU games I have ever been at. It was at the Mecca for the first time in a long time. MU was behind and came back to advance to NY...It was just a great atmosphere, and seemed appropriate at the time.

IU fans rushed the court last year after a win against Minnesota in what they thought was recognition of "turning a corner". They're good fans, hungry fans. Watching them storm the court whenever they beat an "okay" opponent is sad.

If we win tomorrow, I think the students would have a case for rushing the court. Not that it's an immense win rankings wise (though it'd be big) but because it's Syracuse, the one team we just can't seem to beat.

NO.  If they were undefeated and top 3 maybe.  But not a team that has lost 3 straight coming into this.

He has always been great at stuff like that. I think the difference is that when he was doing it here, they were winning more than they were losing. If they're not, that kind of thing gets old real quick. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, next season is huge for that guy.

Speaking of...Bruce Weber's seat has got to be starting to warm up just a little. They are 50-44 in the Big Ten, and have won 1 tournament game in the 6.5 seasons since they went to the NCAA Final in '05.

PRN-We didn't have too much to celebrate in the late 80's besides Tony Smith and the arrival of KO.

Sultan- Everybody was drunk and it was pathetic but hell it was against ND and was fun. I also enjoyed watching The Bradley Center security personnel try and stop us as they were old and stunned but they were pissed and let us know about it in the subsequent games as it was much tougher to pull out any smuggled  booze. Thanks for the reminder Sultan!

The celebration did look fun for the students. However, Crean aside, I found it kind of embarassing that a school like Indiana would get that excited about beating the #21 team in the country. Then again, the current students might not know, or care, about how far IU basketball has fallen.

For the record, I would also be embarassed if Marquette students had celebrated that much after beating a team ranked in the 20s and MU has no where near the basketball tradition of IU.

Also....it's not as if they've been completely off the map for THAT long.....or that this win was against their biggest rival....or of any real significance for that matter...except to stay above .500 for another week.

It's embarrassing any way you slice it.

To Review ...

MU Fans have rushed the court on these dates ...

* 2005 Senior Day When Mason hit the shot to beat Louisville

* 2003 against Pitt in the NCAA sweet sixteen (neutral court)

* 2002 against #4 Cincy (not 2003 as originally posted or did we rush Cincy in consecutive years?)

* 1995, NIT game in the MECCA against South Florida

* 1989 v ND

* 1981, Doc Rivers 25 foot buzzer shot against ND

Everyone agree with this list?

I still have DePaul in 2010 and East Carolina (date? 2002?) as instances when we were rushed upon.  Agree with this?

I'm pretty sure the Senior Day Louisville rush was in 2004. I had a flight to Mexico that day and we were supposed to leave at halftime to catch it, but everyone refused to leave and ended up on the court lifting Dameon on our shoulders. (Made the flight too.) Kind of embarrassing given that L'ville was unranked but at the same time, I can understand why Indiana rushed last night: caught up in the moment and really excited about a badly needed win. Nothing wrong with that.

All those formal rules are B.S. I understand the point, but who doesn't love rushing the floor anyway?

Also, is that true about rushing the court in Minneapolis against Pitt? That would be amazing and frankly, a source of pride.
