Uconn is the number damn 5 team in the country for a reason. They're good. MU is decent.
Thank you. A voice of reason. We lost last night BECAUSE THEY'RE BETTER THAN WE ARE!!! Anybody at the game could see the talent difference was quite significant.
Agreed that UConn is extremely talented.
So when does MU ever get the talent to win (not just compete closely and lose) against the top tier BE teams (Pitt, UConn, Syracuse, Villanova).
Or is MU competing for 5th place each year in the BE as the goal?
Patience, Grasshopper.
Look on the bright side, we could be Indiana!

The way we are playing right now, I would be happy with 5th place for this year.

Amen ZFB.
Buzz is like Ted Thompson. He sucks until he gets there. We are an inexperienced team. I expect an NCAA bid this year. I expect more than that next year.
I hope Willie isn't in a position where he is expected to grow a company for the long haul. With his mentality, mid manager is about where he belongs (unless he just hates Buzz, in which case, go join Brett)
It pains me to say this - while Crean and Indiana are taking lumps this year and the past two years, he is lining up better and better recruiting classes in the future. No one knows if the highly rated classes pan out or if Crean can coach them to win but he appears to be getting in good talent from the HS ranks.
MU appears to be getting in good JUCO talent but not so much so far from the HS ranks. Still have two open for 2011 and three for 2012 so maybe a chance to get some studs...

Most people would have taken 5th place back in the summer. I would have.

Amen.
I am not saying MU will attain 5th this year or 5th was agood pre-season goal.
I am saying the the best MU can really shoot for any given year if 5th because the top tier teams have more talent.
This year we will likely be anywhere from 10 - 8, 9 - 9 or 8 -10 which puts likely anywhere from 8th to 12th.

Yeah, I'd hate to be a school that has a 5-star big man coming in next season and a likely top-5 class the year after that. Not to go all Chicos, but at least from a talent perspective, Crean will likely be turning it around there in the next 3-4 years. If the school is patient, there's no reason Indiana won't be back in the national spotlight as a legitimate contender come 2014 or so.

That shows no year-over-year improvement, which is a must IMO. I admit that I'd be OK with 5th place, though, if it included advancing past the 1st round of the NCAA tourney. *That's* where I really want to see improvement.

Grass is always greener...
Does anyone else enjoy the irony of fans basically being upset because Marquette is not overachieving this season?

Which is about where we were predicted in the preseason. Like it was said earlier by merrittsstache, we are upset because we are not overachieving.

My thoughts exactly. Also the same irony of fans being upset about the Bears overachieving.

I look at it slightly differently: outside of Duke and Pitt, we haven't played a team -- UConn included -- that I looked at and thought: "We don't have a prayer against these guys. They're just better than us." Like last year, I look around and see two or three very good teams, and then a whole bunch of teams with a whole bunch of warts, and I think: "Hey, there's no reason we can't make some noise here. These teams have as many, if not more, issues than we do." It's the missed opportunities that bother me, in the end.
I for one will be patient. Look at Wake Forest for an example of impatience.
