Title: Traditionals and 3 Point Shooting
Post by: Lennys Tap on January 11, 2011, 12:50:32 PM
Earlier this year there was a great deal of conversation about our poor 3 point shooting and the need to recruit more "traditional" players. As our offensive efficiency numbers go through the roof and our 3 point % rises (now 37.9% to UW's 37.6) can we officially put that argument to bed?

MU could still use a traditional player like Josh Gasser who's shooting a cool 18.2% from 3.

When you subtract his first game from his stats (he was 2-4) his number is 13.8%.

And UW fans (like my brother) know that this is a big problem for them.  They have no answer at the 2 guard right now.  Wilson hasn't really stepped up.  Jarmusz has been a disappointment.  Gasser is limited.

They have actually been giving Brett Valentyn (a walk-on...son of Bo's attorney) some time at that spot.

Right now, they would love to have guards that could shoot like DB or DJO.

Didn't they beat us?

I didn't say they sucked...I said they had problem at the #2 guard position.

Yup.   But our team has a much higher ceiling and unless someone comes out of nowhere, they have peaked.    They have devolved into a 2.5 man team.   So little help beyond Taylor, Leuer and occasionally Nankivil that they are spending an awful lot of high pick and rollilng and clearouts for Taylor to create late in the shot clock instead of the vaunted swing.    If others step up, I will take this all back.   But the last couple of times I have watched any of their games, it has not been balanced.   But Bo is a fine coach and maybe he will figure it out.

They are also playing very well defensively.  That is what is saving them right now.

All this said..I still wish MU would have beaten Wisky - hate that they get bragging rights.  Even if MU goes farther in the post season this year than does Bucky (which could likely happen), those douches still have bragging rights on the head to head win.  That said, I'd rather be playing later in March than is Bucky.  We shall see.

Completely agree about bragging rights, but if I had to choose, I still would rather beat ND.   Of course, I don't live in wiscy, so I don't have to listen to that crap too much.

There's the difference and why I'd rather beat Becky. But also why I think ND is our bigger rival, because they are hated by pretty much all Marquette alumni and students, whether you're from Wisconsin or not, and whether you live in Wisconsin or not.

UW is a flawed team this year, but as is always their deal, they are finding ways to get it done. They're ranked for a reason (I believe they are winning at half over MSU right now in East Lansing...will be interesting to see if that score holds).

I agree with you that MU has a higher ceiling but also think they have a lower basement.  In other words, we have more variability then they do IMO that can go either way.

In addition to not living in WI, I married into a family of ND fans.  So I, too, consider any win against ND much better news than a win against UW.  One nice thing about this marriage, though, is that I occasionally get to go to football games at ND, tour the stadium and field, and then watch them get throttled.  That always fills me with joy.
