This kid seems to get open look after open look from beyond the three point line. Can he really not hit that shot at all?
I was watching him shoot free throws and noticed that his release is really low. I bet the same problem exists with his jumper. Something you can get away with in high school that you can't at this level.
Nothing that shooting thousands of jump shots this summer can't fix. He should take a cue from Buycks whose outside shot is much improved with a form that is near perfect.
He knows his role and it's not shooting threes.
I completely 100% agree with you that his role is not to sit outside and hit threes but....if he (or cadougan for that matter) could step up and drain one or two that would open what seems to be a very densely populated lane for MU when those guys are in. That is his game drive and dish but he needs to bring his defender outside the paint.
And when VB and JC are in the game together, I'm cringing due to the lack of scoring on the floor (except Vander does drive to the hoop well). I agree that they each need to be able to hit the occasional shot to at least keep the defense honest and have to guard them.

His free throws actually don't look terrible in comparison to jumper.

I feel the same way. any defense is going to lay off blue and jc and leave them open. neither are a threat to hit jump shots. not sure who is the better shooter, JC or blue
Dwayne Wade worked hard on his jumper while at Marquette. Blue definitely needs to improve his shooting to be a complete player. He seemed tentative in the game last night.
His form on his free throws is much better than on his jump shot. He's got some bad habits on his jumper. Hopefully, he'll get this fixed. I really like his game, though he's very clearly a freshman.

I've said it here a few times already. His form is just as bad on his FT as it is on his jumper. He's hitching and flipping/flinging the ball with his release point underneath and to the right of his chin. When he gets the flip correct it's a swish; when he hitches on the flip it's a horrid brick. No consistency to it. SOMEBODY has got to get him in the gym and start fixing his form or his jumper will continue to struggle and suffer as will his FTs.
And again, I really like VB a lot and he has incredible potential to be a great one for us. I love when he's on the floor because of ALL the things he does. But he desperately needs a shooting coach who can fix him. It's just silliness to even be talking NBA right now.
If you watch Blue in the shoot around and compare his 15-18 foot jumper to his 3 point shot its like 2 different shots for him. He routinely nails the mid-range jumper but at an earlier shootaround during a non-conf game when buzz was having the players go station-to-station he missed 19 out of 20 3's. I am hopeful that he will continue to work on his shot and develop into an adequate shooter as he can get to the rim nicely and any jump shot will make him so much more dangerous. Then again, there are loads of players that never can develop that shot.
Blue is a supposed NBA prospect...I am guessing it would be in his best interests to develop that shot. and soon.

Sometimes they look great.
Other times he's pushing the ball and has a weird kink midway through the shooting motion.
Neither Vander or Junior have decent rotation on their shots. Now it's turned into a lack of confidence in their offense. Look at a players FT shooting form and you can tell if they are close to getting there or have serious flaws in the form. I'd bet both of them will return next year much improved. For this year, I'm not looking forward to much improvement.
