Title: what kind of lead do we need for Buzz to clear the bench
Post by: WellsstreetWanderer on January 10, 2011, 09:22:44 PM
I thought with 4 minutes to go and up by 20 plus he should have begun to get the bench involved.. afterall we have to play at Notre Dame soon

I wondered how long it would take for someone to complain... didn't take long.

After all the debate we've already been having about our resume (or lack thereof), I was all for nailing this one to the wall.  If we put subs in and win by 11 or 12 over #9 ND, it does not nearly look as good as a 22pt shellacking.  Call me greedy.

I have a feeling if this was Providence or DePaul, we'd be seen some subs trickle in around the 6 minute mark.

Typically the coach who's trailing "waves the white flag" and empties his bench first and the leading coach follows suit.

Not complaining about a great win, but I had the same question myself.  I no longer believe in letting up or that running up a score is a problem - I've seen too many games where we tried running the clock out and lost (mostly against Louisville), but I thought that at least we could have gotten Fulce and/or Cadougan a few minutes instead of going solely with the top 6.

Either way, great win.

I said the same thing with 5 min left and up 24.  "Geeze maybe we could get Ewill and JJ in the game here?"

Dosen't really matter though, Buzz has decided on his top 8-9 and that is that.

EXACTLY.

With 4-5 minutes to go, ND was still pressing (and got a TO or 2)...there is no way Buzz would bring Frozena, etc into that situation.

Once Brey started emptying his Bench, Buzz did the same. Buzz also was trying desperately to call a TO after we made a shot with 1:30 to go in order to get Frozena into the game earlier but the ref didn't see him.

Nothing to complain about.

Brey wasn't giving up, so Buzz kept them in. Brey could have thrown in the towel earlier, but playing his bench is not his MO.

Bringing in Fulce is not the same as bringing in Frozena.  He could have played Fulce and no one would have questioned it.

With 2-3 minutes left or so, Buzz made some substitutions, including Fulce.  He then took him out about 30 second later (may have been a little longer) to bring in Frozen-A.  Just my opinion, but hasn't Joe earned the right to play a little longer than that over a crowd favorite walk-on?

Joe is an important role player who happens to have a bad knee. Resting him and keeping his knee healthy is more important than getting him some garbage minutes.

I'd agree except what was the point of putting him in at all at that juncture of the game?

I think Bilas & Rafferty commented on this last night.  I think Jay Bilas's comment was along the lines of, "with the 3 point shot you don't clear the bench too soon."
