Phillips is from Milwaukee. Will/Should we give him a look for the "Reggie Smith spot" If we take him before the start of the semester, he will be available early in the BE season next year (start of the second semester 2012).
Thoughts?

DeMarcus Phillips leaving Iowa State
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5966738
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State guard DeMarcus Phillips has decided to transfer.
Coach Fred Hoiberg announced Phillips' decision on Tuesday.
Phillips, a junior from Milwaukee, played in eight games this season, averaging 2.5 points. He was in his first season at Iowa State after playing the last two seasons at Marshalltown Community College.
He can't even find playing time behind a Division 3 guard who would have never cut it in the Big East/at Marquette (the same 1who's averaging 15 ppg and shooting 53% from 3 point range).
In all seriousness, he's a guy who'd have 1 1/2 years to play who's averaging 2.5 ppg at ISU. He probably wouldn't bring much to MU that we don't already have. I think we could find any number of incoming freshman guards who could come in and average 2.5 ppg and have 4 years of eligibility and be eligible from day 1 instead of 1/2 way through the season next year. 2.5 ppg is not hard to find.
No, we need to work on getting his teammate Christopherson back!
Nah, we need some traditional players like the Stanford women's team.
Remember these words... WE NEED BIGS!

He's already a junior? We'd only get half a season out of him and he'd graduate. The drawback to the midseason transfer is that you effectively lose a year of eligibility. Look at Maymon, he transferred from here as a freshman and is now a sophomore at Tennessee. Sure, you get to play sooner than if you wait a season, but he'd come in as a senior who was first eligible to play when the Big East slate started. Considering how tough it's been to integrate other guys into our system already, there's no reason to bring in a 2.5 ppg contributor when we will want to be giving those minutes to Blue, Cadougan, and Wilson. No thanks.
In a word....No
Iowa State has a kid leaving the team. What the hell is going on over there? :P

what are you talking about here?

Someone mentioned that we would have him for 1-1/2 years, and I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Phillips would be transferring as a junior, and would come in as a senior. If he came here and played during the 2011-12 season, he would be a senior for half a season. Why give a scholarship and bring a guy in when he is only eligible for about 20 games, barring postseason success?
Basically, look at Jeronne Maymon as opposed to Jamil Wilson. Maymon left Marquette as a freshman in 2009-10 and is now playing as a sophomore for Tennessee as a sophomore in 2010-11. Yes, he gets to play a year sooner, but he effectively missed a season of eligibility from the back half of 09-10 to the front half of 10-11. So after using a 1/2 year of eligibility at Marquette, he is left with 2-1/2 years of eligibility at Tennessee. The problem with that is you only end up with 3 years of eligibility overall.
Wilson, on the other hand, waited until the end of 2009-10 to transfer. He has to sit out the full 2010-11 season, but has full eligibility as a sophomore in 2011-12. So he used 1 year of eligibility at Oregon and will use 3 at Marquette, giving him his full 4 years of overall eligibility.
Now we look at this Phillips kid. He used 2 years at a JUCO, 1/2 year at Iowa State, and will only have 1/2 year left if he plays in 2011-12. Unless you're someone like John Wall, what's the point of bringing them in? There's just not enough time to acclimate to the system unless you are such a phenomenal player that you will be a difference maker over the course of those 20 games you have to play.
Why would we want someone from Iowa State, they aren't even a DI team and have a bunch of D3 players on there.
I thought mid-season transfers still keep all of their eligibility. But apparently, that season is shot.

Don't want him. But, the point here is that MU has no scholies to give for the 2nd semester as scholies are for the year as IWB has often pointed out.
sounds good for uwm.

You get 10 semesters to complete your 4 years (Seasons) of elgibility. Right now Maymon has been enrolled in 3 semesters, his 4th will start in January.
It was his choice to lose a season. He very easily could have sat out ALL this year, and had 6 semesters for 3 full years (Seasons) of hoops.
Jeronne is clearly interested in instant gratification.

Easier said than done. Good advise.

Well, yeah, but it doesn't change that we'd only get 20 or so games of eligibility out of Phillips, making him a virtually useless addition to our program.
Hey Mr. PH - whazz up?? You still on the bandwagon at this point?

I have to think even Hoopaloop would consider this to be a discussion that was dead.
