Title: Question about the zone
Post by: Norm on December 29, 2010, 11:21:17 PM
Marquette struggles mightily against the zone this year because we are not a consistent outside shooting team. Couldn't we at try to bring Jones in when the opposition plays the zone to at least see if he can drain some 3's and soften the zone? Why not use him in a designated hitter type role to get him some playing time?

Which game did he get backdoored regularly?  Vandy loves to run the backdoor.  They would have been salivating like Pavlov's dogs.

Vander's three was in and out.  Would have been a huge one for his confidence.  Opposing coaches should sag him bigtime until he starts hitting.

Productive comment.  Are you thinking of your nights with Stew Morrill or Bo Ryan?

Hard to shoot well when you don't try.  It seems to be an absolute last resort unless it's desperation time.  Give Buycks and DJO a green light to shoot it - almost every three we take looks outside of the offense, not going to get significantly better to have Jones trying threes instead of the others.  Buzz didn't have to work perimeter shooting into the offense last year, the personnel made it effective.  This year he's got to try to make it an option even if there aren't three sharpshooters on the floor.

I thought we were much more effective against the zone defense last night.

True, we're not shooting teams out of it but we attacked the free throw line area via pass or dribble far better than earlier in the season, which led to some easy baskets.

Yeah, in fact Vandy had to switch back to a man defense because we were tearing up their zone down the stretch.

And again, you don't shoot over a zone...you attack the seems.

Hey Sultan:
You need to attend remedial spelling with me. While I learn how to spell Bikes, you can practice "seams", and then we can both regain credibility.
