With DJO shooting off the team seems to driving to the hole A LOT and passing up open 3's. I believe the key to winning is Dwight. I know there has been a lot of criticism on him. I feel that right now he is going to vital in spreading the defense out since most the teams are packing the post because of our lack of perimeter shooting ability. He is the most consistent shooter this year. If he gets hot he can stretch the defense and it will be easier for the other guys like Blue and DJO to drive. Also he seemed to be most effective at getting to the rim against Bucky so the shot will create more problems for the defense since if he drives the defender who is playing on him will likely be beat and another defender will be called in to help leaving an open man. I think he single handedly can up start DJO since of this reason.
Is there a question in here, or is this just an opinion that you wanted to share with the world?
It's interesting how much flack Buycks takes on these boards especially considering he has played pretty well this season. I realize he's only played in 9 games but coming into the season, if someone told you that Buycks would average 10 points, 4 boards, 4.4 assists, have a 1.9/1 A/TO while shooting 50% from the floor and 38.5% from 3, wouldn't you be happy (or at least satisfied) with those numbers?
Yes, he leads the team in turnovers but keep in mind that he's logging a lot of him minutes at PG, which is not his natural position. We're quick to give passes to Crowder or Butler or even Lazar when they struggle playing in the post, but we give much less leeway to Buycks playing PG. I'm not giving him a complete pass for the TOs, many of which are of the "unforced" variety, but I think that many MU fans are just looking for a whipping boy for a team that hasn't quite gotten it together just yet and he seems to be the guy. I realize that other guys have taken some heat on these boards lately (and most definitely from Buzz) but, honestly, Buycks is one of the players we should be the least concerned about at this point.
I agree he has exceeded my expectations, but we need a leader, can he be that guy? I say no, I say that the team leader needs to be Butler, but maybe Buycks can be that guy

What is your reason he can't be the leader? Why does Butler have to be the leader?
I think Butler should be the leader, as he's the guy who's been here the longest (with Fulce) and has shown the highest level of play. But that doesn't always translate to on-court leadership. I do agree, however, that Buycks has been one of our better players. He's not a natural point like Junior, but with DJO not scoring, Buycks brings an element neither of the other point guards really have, which is offense. He can get to the rack, shoot from three, he's been an all-around solid player. Yes, he's erratic, but look at the numbers Merritts pointed out. Who could complain about any of that?
Buycks takes the flack because of his streetball style, because he's clearly not a prototypical point guard. He takes abuse to the point that one member's username is designed to give Dwight abuse every time the user logs on to this site. There's really been no call for that. Right now, we need someone who's willing to step up and try to make a difference. On a team afraid to shoot, I'll gladly take Buycks, as he seems to be one of the only ones willing to do that.
Buycks as the key to the year? Where are you people getting the mary jane? Please!
If you want to play him at Point--it will be a long year. If you want to play him over DJO, it will also be a long year. He is best coming offf the bench, but Buzz is in love with the guy, so you will get your wish--he will be the key to the season-it just might be a key that does not fit.
It seemed painfully obvious this past game, no one is the "key" but everyone is a "piece". Nothing easier for an opposing team than to defend against a "key". On this one I am with the opinion of Willie Warrior.

Brew, I'll admit I'm very much on the fence as far as Buycks' game goes. I love soem of the attributes he brings to the team (like you stated) but some of the turnovers/bonehead plays REALLY bother me;especially with him being a senior.
That being said...you are 100% correct..."we need someone who's willing to step up and try to make a difference"...and I think (ok, hope) Dwight can be that guy. Maybe not every single night....but I think he can be a guy that scores in spurts and when he gets going, the defense will concentrate a little bit more on him and leave more open shots for other guys on the floor. Optimistic...probably. Impossible...no way.
The only thing is that Dwight will be to realize this...make the game slow down for himself...and be sure to get the ball to other guys when these good shots become available.
I'm not saying Dwight is "key to winning"...but since we are all looking for someone to step up...I think it could be him.

Personally, I don't think that Buycks is the key to the season. He's just one of the players that I have the least concern about so far. He's not the type of player who's going to put the team on his back and carry them to the postseason, but he's been playing solid basketball so far.
Buycks is not a bad/poor player. He has strengths (takes the ball to the hole), but also has weaknesses. Don't we all (except Obuma)?
I just believe we lose ball distribution ease when he plays the Point. Play him 20 minutes per game to relieve others (DJO, Blue, Jr.), but limit his minutes at PG.

Agreed, DB is a decent player with some strengths on offense as long as he is not the PG. Just gets carried away at times. Defensively, he leaves much to be desired as he tries to overplay the ball leading to guys blowing by him or being stuck in help as the ball is passed out for an open three. DB needs to play smarter on "D" so he can really help this team.
We have trouble rebounding and Buycks is the one guard who seems interested/capable. And on a team that seems a little timid offensively he's a guy who seems unafraid. He dribbles too much and he drives me nuts taking shots just INSIDE the 3 point line but given DJO's slump, Vander's limited offensive game and Junior's need for breathers Dwight has to play big minutes right now.

Yep.

I think a lot of that comes from his style of play. He's not going to be the conventional, conservative type guard that Junior is, but despite those turnovers, he's still got a near 2-1 assist-turnover ratio. As Merrits mentioned above, his stats are more than most people would have expected. I say if he's going to bring the aggressive attitude and consistent play along with a better A-T ratio than any of our other primary ball-handlers (only Fulce's 4-1 and Frozena's 1-0 are better) then why not let him play?

∞ A-T ratio!!! Get this guy in the game more!
