Need a college basketball expert to answer this question. Been wondering about this for a long time.
How come Marquette for years was an independent but then they joined a conference ?
I remember when teams like Depaul, Norte Dame and Marquette were all independents.
I know that Norte Dame is still independent in football but I mean basketball.
Why did that have to change ?
Because you need to have a conference to build up your schedule and have a legit chance at the NCAA tournament. Also, it gives you a more steady stream of revenue. What kind of TV deal could MU get as an independent?
It all boils down to money. "But Notre Dame.....oh, yeah, I forgot about that huge contract from NBC..."

Their contract with NBC isn't huge. B10 and SEC schools make more money with their current contracts.

With ND, it all boils down to Fan and School Arrogance.
